2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'm not sure if I should even post this. "Voting for Hillary is a sin." I just returned from
Anna Marie, Florida. Yesterday, we were crossing the street and a big bus passed by with the "Voting for Hillary is a sin" painted in huge letters on the side, AND a microphone saying the same thing as loud as it could.
It all happened so fast that I couldn't see if there was a name of the person responsible for this repulsive display.
My only hope is that people with car windows rolled up and air-condition going couldn't hear it.
I am still truly shocked to the core about this! I guess I am naive but I just didn't realize that people could or would stoop this low.

(5,648 posts)Or at least they are voting against Trump. It is the evangelicals who are lying to themselves so that they can support immoral Donald Trump. You need to be more care what you post.

(9,461 posts)divide between white non-Hispanic Catholics and Hispanic Catholics. With the Pope's message of climate change, income inequality, immigration, anti-death penalty, etc. he has a majority of issues on the Dem side. Of course, the Republicans still have the anti-abortion, anti-birth control, anti LGBT in common with them, but a good chunk of Catholics don't agree with their church on those issues either.

(5,648 posts)As the two Catholic candidates for vice president prepare to face off in a debate on Tuesday at Longwood University, a new poll of likely Catholic voters shows that Clinton leads Trump. The poll also shows that Catholics do not toe the hierarchys line on abortion, healthcare and religious refusals. Since 1972, the Catholic vote has been a reliable bellwether for the results of Election Day.
Key findings include:
46 percent of Catholic voters support Clinton, while 40 percent support Trump.

(413 posts)I've never known that area to be "overly" religious so I imagine it is people from out of town.
It's sad but if history is any indicator there is NO low that the religious kooks won't stoop to.

(459 posts)i am a devoutly christian man that was raised in black churches in the south but to me my views on christianity are far different than what most republicans seem to think it means. to me it is about helping people in need that are struggling, showing respect for your fellow man and allowing them to live their own life, treating others as you want to be treated, and being true stewards of the earth by taking care of the environment.

(28,270 posts)They want to set up a theocracy in this country and impose their religious views by force of law.
These people are fascists with a veneer of religious BS that they made up in their republican fever dreams.

(5,648 posts)Too many "christians" are far from Christ-like. They make a mockery of their religion.

(30,481 posts)Manatee County as a whole is pretty conservative. Romney 56 Obama 43 in 2012. That said, Anna Maria is a very small and unique subset of that larger population. Only 2000 residents or so.

(7,632 posts)to take religion - any religion, seriously.
Many older people were raised with a god belief of some kind but more and more people in countries where education and particularly the sciences are finding the idea to be ridiculous and not sustainable.
As mentioned above, in this country at least, it seems to largely give cover to bigotry, misogyny and the perpetuation of male dominance along with suppression of "the other".
