Part of the reason that it will take a while to know what was on the laptop is the need for a warrant. They probably did see the email headers and recipients when they were looking through Weiner's stuff. My guess is that they will find that any emails to or from Hillary were already retrieved from her server previously. But they will have to cross-check everything to make sure there is nothing new. There will also be the question of whether Weiner had access to any classified information, since he doesn't have a clearance.

Word is, it went down like this:

1. NYPD was investigating Weiner
2. NYPD found the emails on Weiner's computer
3. NYPD alerted the FBI investigative team
4. NYPD + FBI team took it to Comey
5. Comey took it to DOJ

They don't need a warrant for any of that. I believe they are seeking a warrant right now to search the actual emails.
