2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDear Election Concern Trolls;
Oh Hai. I see you are very very super dooper concerned that Hillary cannot possibly win; not with the fact that the FBI found some emails that are not hers on somebody elses computer. I have emails from Hillary too, we are pretty tight. Sends me emails daily, uses my name and keeps me up to date on her daily life and future goals. I await the FBI.
She is up in most polls nationally. But oh my, those silly tracking polls show that she is seriously losing. By like a point. So, even though she is up in most swing state polls that we need to win, I can see how concerned you are about those outlier polls. I realize you put alot of work into scouring the interwebs, searching far and wide for something, anything really, to be concerned about.
Let me help you out. Stop. We already know what you are doing, it is as clear as glass. You are concern trolling and we are totally fucking bored with it. Honestly, don't you think you should work on GOTV efforts? https://www.hillaryclinton.com/calls/
Or not. Since your goal is not the same as the rest of ours.

(595 posts)Like myself who are somewhat concerned are trolls? Based on WaPo report this morning and other real polls there is cause for concern. By then again I don't have that 200 post legitimacy...
Wow, with friends like this it is not a very inviting place to be....

(364 posts)You have to prove yourself and intentions. I'm new too. This is a safe space, but no one knows one another. It is so easy for anyone to create an account and very subtly insert themselves to spread the propaganda from other side. Internet is not a safe place. So if you have very few posts and more posts are about how we are going to lose than not, then there is some doubt. It's not personal. Also, given the state of the race, I think we are say with high confidence that Hillary will win. The margins may be in question, and the latest news might put a dent into the margin, but 270 is 99% sure thing. So what's the concern? I think one just needs to think about wording the message well.
berksdem
(595 posts)I never once insinuated we would lose. I simply have concerns as the race has tightened over the last two weeks. It is something I am personally concerned about... And bc of this concern you're labeled a troll?
Sorry, but "proving myself" as a liberal is some serious nonsense. No offense but are we in a gang or something that I have to show my true colors? Simply typing "concern" get a you labeled as a troll which is not right.
I'm new too, but damn if I'm going to be negative at this point. I have the utmost positivity that Hillary can do this. We all just need to VOTE!

(1,580 posts)There are some concerns out there though. There was just one post which was concerned because It said AA turnout was low. The problem was that the poster inserted/changed the headline of the article he was quoting inserting numbers which were not in the article. This is suspicious. I look at the polls, yes, but I never forget that polls are only a snapshot of America and the only poll that counts is election day I just just. So I say GOTV.

I guess this site is just not for me... I have been around for a while but usually just read the comments. Started posting and now accuses of being a troll bc of my "concern."
Thanks again and well wishes... I will just take my posts elsewhere with the hope of a more welcoming community.

(14,341 posts)we've had some bad experiences with trolls here, especially - the long term variety. We're a little put off and leery of newbs who come in with a litany of "concerns" right outta the gate. We just got rid of a pack of chronic trolls who are probably trying to work their way back in with new identities as we speak.
I think your "sunshine" reference is a little exaggerated, but okay.

I'm concerned when I hear that Trump's camp is newly encouraged and giddy following the Comey's injudicious letter. I'm also concerned because SHOULD we lose this election we are in a world of hurt for as long as can be projected.
So, I'm concerned. And I'd like to think I'm also welcoming.

If you want to vote for Trump than you best move your ass to the United States now, other wise put a sock in it!! She had the nerve to bring up a link from Brietbart, and I was like, what? Next you will be quoting to me Sean Hannity as a legitimate source!!

Then there's the fairly abundant number, new and old, who want Hillary to enact their rock-em sock-em fantasies and lash out in ways that are not only not her style but counterproductive. They may or may not be actual trolls. The older ones may just be carried away in the moment, but posters who jump in and start flailing on their third post? Hmmmm.

(14,173 posts)For one, "concern trolls" are like voting fraudsters. There is way more CONCERN about stopping 'concern trolls' than warrants the amount of them that ever slip through. You are so CONCERNED with an influx of concern trolls that you had to make an OP on it?
The irony.
And I also think you don't even understand the purpose of a concern troll.
A good definition I found:
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=concern%20troll
In an argument (usually a political debate), a concern troll is someone who is on one side of the discussion, but pretends to be a supporter of the other side with "concerns". The idea behind this is that your opponents will take your arguments more seriously if they think you're an ally.
A concern troll would not work in this instance, on DU. Why would they even try? No one on here is going to be scared into voting for Trump because someone said they are worried about, say, Hillary's emails.
Concerned about silent Trump supporters, or just reality TV fans that don't usually vote, answer polling calls, or even follow politics much deciding at the last minute it would be 'something different' or 'entertaining' to have Trump in charge, and worrying that some on our side will get complacent with Hillary's poll numbers IS NOT CONCERN TROLLING! It is keeping people awake and wary of complacency. Personally IMO, DU is already theoreticllly at least, 100% voting for a Democrat anyways, so I'll grant that complacency is more of a problem with those luke warm Democrat voters that don't have the interest in politics enough to join a message board. So those concerned it is more about venting about their worst fears for events OUTSIDE of DU. It is harmless though, and no need to be so damn CONCERNED about it. That does more damage, causes more antagonism in here and for nothing.
Some people are simply more sensitive and anxious than others. Its just in their nature. In fact every group needs these to balance the over the top hubris of those that never see danger and assumes the majority is always on their side. Did you ever consider that these 'trolls' are just the more sensitive segment of DU, and are ALLIES that you maybe shouldn't be laughing at and ridiculing?
Its also a cowardly thing to do. Easy to spout out how anyone that thinks Hillary, (and YOU by extension) is still in danger of losing is a TROLL. But of course no one would even have the stomach to tell you they told you so if the worst happens.
....................
Poll before the Brexit vote:
I wonder if there was some poster on a British liberal leaning message board before that vote that was 'concerned' about a hidden surge of ignorant voters, and if they were also ridiculed, and/or banned for raising their concerns at the time.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I was talking about people who recently signed up or rarely posted and the totality of their ops are CONCERN TROLLING. Not supporting anyone or anything. Just concern trolling. They change headlines to seem worse, they invent stats, they only post the most rightwing polls. You should not be so very very upset. No point, really.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,173 posts)Its one thing to count your chickens (or donkeys) before they are hatched. Its another to ridicule those that prefer to retain a cautious optimism while raising the point that we haven't won anything yet. And implying that anyone that does that is a 'troll'.
I can't believe that I, as a staunch former Bernie nominee supporter, now a Hillary Presidential supporter is concerned more than some that have been with Hillary the whole way. But like I say, some of us are just born that way. It would be more gracious to try and accept those of us more wary. Put up with us for just one more week, then we can all celebrate together as the stress is washed away in one day.
We all want the same thing.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Just the trolls. They always dissappear after the event ends. These will too.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,173 posts)But I joined in 2003 out of CONCERN for the US that it was going down a dark road. If nothing else to vent about it. I found this place from following Bartcop. It was like a haven of more liberal voices who I could share my concerns with.
It just seems counterproductive to brand those new members that come here and happen to raise concerns, and share their worries in what they thought was a place they could do that, instead are ostrizised and even banned. I highly doubt there are enough paid 'concern trolls' to ever be concerned about it in here.
I think there is too much paranoia on both sides at this late stage. We have to put up with the anxiety for another week. Some are overly worried about Nov. 9th, some are overly reactive to those that are worried in assuming they must be working for the other side to cause dissention. I hate to think there were young/new DUers that have been turfed out of here for simply expressing their worry and then branded swiftly as "trolls".
bravenak
(34,648 posts)And we are still on it. Anybody that needs to post multiple negative nancy ops per day about how we are losing, when we are actually winning, is the only typ of poster that i was talking about. Most folks know they are not trolls and so don't even notice the op. Or care really. They have concerns, but they don't go way overboard, they discuss.

(67 posts)Look, my voice is quite rare here, but I'm a known quantity, having been a political blogger since 2004. Perhaps I'm not a terribly well-known writer, but my name is familiar to some of you, and plenty of DU posts have linked to my site over the years.
I've been called a "concern troll" because I tend to focus on the bad news. I'm not a troll of any kind. (A bit of an ogre perhaps, but only when awakened prematurely.)
I'm not trying to depress the vote. Quite the opposite. Fear can be a great motivator, and nothing scares me more than the prospect of a Trump presidency. That's why I've been rooting for Hillary from the beginning, even at a time when many of you were bonkers for Bernie: I always thought she was the strongest candidate against the tangerine monster.
But yeah, I'm a pessimist by nature. Some people see the glass as half-full and some people see the glass as half-empty. I look at the glass and see a worldwide drought that will leave billions of parched souls dying in the dust of a waterless world spinning in a bleak, pitiless, Godless universe.
That's simply the way I am. About everything.
I know that this is supposed to be the season for cheerleading and blinkered optimism and all of that rah-rah. That's understandable. But can't you make just a little room for the natural-born Eeyores, for captious souls with a phobic reaction to any sort of rah-rah -- we few, we unhappy few, we in the circle of cynics?
And if your answer is "no," then may I at least warn against the automatic presumption of malefic intent? That way paranoia lies. Paranoia is the specialty of Alex Jones and his brethren; we imitate his odious example at our peril.
