How Bad Could a Trump Presidency Be?

When the Supreme Court gave the presidency to George W. Bush I was resigned to live with it. While I never entertained any idea that W was the least bit qualified, I was reassured that he had a cast of “grownups” carried over from his father’s administration that would at least keep us on a steady course. It didn’t take long for me to be disabused of that silly notion. The rest is history, very sad history.

Now we’re looking at a candidate who has never held a position in public service and has never even performed an act of public service. He has no legacy to preserve. He has no “grownups” in the wings to actually perform even the minimal tasks of the office. He has surrounded himself with a frightening cast of political freaks. Bannon, Bossie, Stone, Christie, Giuliani and the other deplorable faces of the Trump campaign offer no reassurance that Trump will even get through a week in office without bringing down calamity on our republic. Their agenda is far removed from the few values the majority of Americans embrace in common.

Even Trump’s Vice Presidential running mate is a source of great concern. He wasn’t Trump’s first choice, but Bannon wanted a political lightweight who wouldn’t have a sudden crisis of conscience and interfere with the real mission of the Trump presidency, whatever that is. So far he has done an admirable job of defending Trump by refusing to answer any question about Trump’s sordid past or his questionable present. His own record in congress and as governor is grotesque.

Were Trump to win, the executive branch would be nominally led by a reality show host and a talk show host. Building and massaging the massive ego of Donald J. Trump would be administration’s top priority. We would have to leave it to the vile surrogates and creepy Trump kids see how that would turn into public policy. As far as the agenda of the people who created this nightmare, we would just have to watch in horror as it unfolds. The dearth of actual policy proposals from the Trump campaign portends of some very unpleasant surprises for all of us, including many hapless Republicans who voted for him.

I don't think it was meant to be comedy as much as a warning. Last year I moved 500 miles north from Southern Oregon to Northwest Washington. I am now only 15 miles from Canada and I have already plotted a course to Victoria in a boat we could live on if we have to.

...at least in some areas, and actually govern as a moderate. Early in the campaign, he made noises about his support of Social Security and Medicare. He's talked about our crumbling infrastructure. In *some* ways, he might surprise everyone and turn out to be an Eisenhower/Nixon Tory Reformer. I doubt it will matter much in the end, because he is, of course, as mad as a hatter., and any Presidency of his will be a total catastrophe. But the scenery along the way to Hell might not be quite what the Ryan/Pences think it will be...
