Donald Trump Jr. and top aide retweet baseless allegation of assassination attempt

Trump was quickly rushed off-stage by Secret Service at a campaign rally in Reno, Nev., on Saturday night as a scuffle erupted in the crowd directly in front of the stage and a man was led away. It wasn't immediately clear exactly what had happened.

But amid the chaos, some people seemed sure. Within minutes, at least two top Trump campaign voices -- Donald Trump Jr., and top social media aide Dan Scavino -- passed along unsubstantiated claims that the GOP nominee had just survived an "assassination attempt."

@PaulLewis

His name is Austyn Crites. He's 33 and works on high altitude balloons. He's voting for some Republicans this year - just not Trump.

Austin told me he was punched, kicked. Someone grabbed his testicles and he his neck was in a chokehold. He said he feared for his life.

IMO Trump called on his crowd to take him out, his crowd got out of control and started to beating Austin, and the SS removed Trump from the situation for his safety.

A camera man was assaulted for attempting to film the beating of Austin.

Tonight's SNL opening was spot-on. Alleged child rape, KKK endorsement and so much more (that should completely sink a candidate) gets no traction, while Clinton emails rule the day...and the next day...and the next day...

It's absolute madness. I keep expecting to wake up and find that I really do live in a rational world.

they truly have no shame. people could tell immediately it was not an assassination attempt. all he wants to do is enrage his psycho base that believes every rightwing lie meme posted on social media even more.

should finish him in the eyes of anybody who cares about honesty in their candidate.

This election says SO much about the majority of Republican voters.

Indeed it does. We have a lot of work cut out for us starting November 9, as there is a dangerous amount of utter irrationality in this country.

Police intervened and saved the guy. Then they held him in a bathroom for two hours, keeping him away from the press and reporters.

I'm trying to find a short video clip of Trump saying,

"We have one of those guys from the Hillary Clinton campaign. How much you being paid, fifteen hundred dollars? Alright, take him out."

No luck yet, but the full rally tape is online, and the clip starts at 1h 52m 20s.

Just imagine how much safer the situation would've been, if everybody in the room had a gun.
