Donald Trump Did Really Well With Union Households. Thats A Bad Sign For Unions.

It Looks Like Donald Trump Did Really Well With Union Households. That’s A Bad Sign For Unions.
Dave Jamieson
Huffington Post

Back in January, the labor group Working America raised an alarm for Democrats: Their canvassing near Pittsburgh and Cleveland suggested Donald Trump had undeniable appeal in areas with high union membership. His outsider message, built on assailing trade deals such as NAFTA, was resonating with white folks with union cards who might normally vote Democratic.

Caveat: There are no completely reliable data on the votes of union members specifically. But Tuesday’s exit polling, which deserves a grain of salt, suggests that Hillary Clinton did worse among union households than the Democratic candidate has done in recent elections. (”Union household” is different from union member ― the designation includes not only union members but voters who live with one.)

The national exit polls gave Clinton an 8-point advantage in union households. She did better in some states: In Michigan, Clinton had a 16-point margin among union households.

But those would still be weak performances compared with other recent candidates. Exit polls from 2012 showed Obama taking union households by 18 points.

"Your union contract is voided, but you now have the freedom to work for $12/hour instead of your union negotiated $25/hour. But, thank goodness you don't have to pay a few bucks a week in union dues. Of course, those extra bucks (and then some) will be erased by your health insurance premiums going up 20% while your lifetime coverage limits return and you can't cover your kid in college anymore since she's too old."

Teamster union member at the time Reagan was elected and the Teamsters supported him.

We did not, but there was a lot of hatred for Carter even from good union members, sad time.

Breaking up the ICC was a tough one for many of our Members. We lost several thousand Member Jobs when the Airlines were deregulated. And that one is still a sour spot yet today.

haven't been very good for union members, and Republican business owners who closed factories and offshored their manufacturing haven't been very good for the white collar workers who used to be the Republican base.

I voted for Hillary. My union is a very large one that represents many low paid workers. I don't know how the union came out in the vote, but I do know some things. I have not always been a union member, but came to a union position after 30 years of nonunion. I was always very pro-union. That said, I am appalled at the total lack of attention my union gives to its members. Frankly, I have no idea what they do all day. They complain about lack of membership at my workplace, but where are they? I had to seek them out in order to join. They seem to spend as little time as possible communicating with us. Kind of like our management. If this is the way other large unions act? Unionism is dead and they brought it on themselves. They do not use their position to educate their workers.

Shall we revisit them in two years and find out how that Trump support is working out for them?
