Newt Gingrich: Sandy Hook Shooting Tied To Godless Society

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich suggested on Wednesday that the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was tied to godlessness in contemporary American society.

Speaking to Brian Thomas of radio station 55KRC, Gingrich reflected on Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn., which claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and six adults.

"When you have an anti-religious, secular bureaucracy and secular judiciary, seeking to drive God out of public life, something fills the vacuum," Gingrich said. "I don’t know that going from communion to playing war games, in which you practice killing people is necessarily an improvement."

Gingrich urged the national dialogue in the aftermath of the shooting to focus on the problems with America's youth, who "don't see their fellow Americans as human beings, but as objects."

Newt neatly ignores the fact that the US rates at or near the top of industrialized countries in both religious followers and murder rates.

This religious rabble rousing is the latest incarnation of bigotry. Republicans need to fill out their numbers by attracting those who need to be driven by hatred. And the object of hatred can shift as needed. It's harvesting paranoia. Should be no surprise to DUers.

Of course, as the millions and millions of souls already lost to religious warfare could easily attest if they existed, people who follow god don't drop the war-gaming (chess, anyone?) or the massacres.

But they do kill more and play less.

He won election after election in his suburban Atlanta district by bravely protecting them from the Peoples' Republic of Escape From New York. He routinely blurts out anything to attack an opponent or to cattle-prod an audience in a direction he wants it to go. He does it reflexively. His own allies coined the phrase "Tell Newt to shut up."

I'm quite serious about what I said in #28 below:

As for not seeing "fellow Americans as human beings, but as objects," I believe one Newton Leroy Gingrich used to advise his fellow Republicans to in terms that would elicit loathing and disgust from their audiences, and to treat political opponents not as fellow Americans with a differing view, but as traitors to be crushed.

Often we search hard for words to define our opponents. Sometimes we are hesitant to use contrast. Remember that creating a difference helps you. These are powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast. Apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.

Why were civil rights activists beaten and firebombed and shot? Way to let your light shine for Jesus, people!

[ur]http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/The-Freedom-Riders.html[/url]

On Sunday, May 14, 1961—Mother's Day—scores of angry white people blocked a Greyhound bus carrying black and white passengers through rural Alabama. The attackers pelted the vehicle with rocks and bricks, slashed tires, smashed windows with pipes and axes and lobbed a firebomb through a broken window. As smoke and flames filled the bus, the mob barricaded the door. "Burn them alive," somebody cried out. "Fry the goddamn niggers." An exploding fuel tank and warning shots from arriving state troopers forced the rabble back and allowed the riders to escape the inferno. Even then some were pummeled with baseball bats as they fled.

A few hours later, black and white passengers on a Trailways bus were beaten bloody after they entered whites-only waiting rooms and restaurants at bus terminals in Birmingham and Anniston, Alabama.

The bus passengers assaulted that day were Freedom Riders, among the first of more than 400 volunteers who traveled throughout the South on regularly scheduled buses for seven months in 1961 to test a 1960 Supreme Court decision that declared segregated facilities for interstate passengers illegal.
