Of the top 15 murder rate states, all except #7 New York have Republican governors and lax gun laws. Florida and Alabama were not included because they did not report 2011 numbers to the FBI. If they did, they would have been included in the top murder rate states, and also with Republican governors and lax gun laws.

(50,949 posts)discussion. Can you tell me why that is?
(This is not snark. I am genuinely curious why, when people hear that a gun was wielded by a gang member, that gun is not part of the gun-control issue.)

(735 posts)Oh, I forget they like the meme that gun control is racist even though most black people and organizations are more pro gun control than whites.

(50,949 posts)Why are their guns not seen as part of the gun control discussion?
Gangs have lots of guns because there are lots of guns around. How is this not part of the issue?

(2,648 posts)was not on the list, what with the brain-dead "governor" we have.

(202 posts)the amount of guns my republican friends have. no one has just one gun, they have one for every day of the week. like it's a fashionable thing, "look i have a colt python to match my snakeskin boots".

(295 posts)Each of the lowest ten firearms murders states has a rate less than a third of any of the 15 high rate states.
I am going to guess that Hawaii has, by far, the lowest rate because there is no gun trade possible, legal or illegal, across state borders.

(2,708 posts)A recent year NINE of the ten states with the highest violent crime rates, have been PRO GUN states - as most all of the 15 highest murder rate states you posted are pro gun.
highest firearm murder rates - all except New York & Michigan are PRO GUN: 1 10.16 Louisiana 2 7.46 Miss 3 5.41 S Carolina 4 5.06 Michigan 5 4.64 Missouri 6 4.39 Arkansas 7 4.12 New York 8 3.97 Pennsy 9 3.93 Georgia 10 3.92 Tenn 11 3.86 NCarolina 12 3.64 Oklahoma 13 3.53 Arizona 14 3.54 Ohio 15 3.29 Indiana
(michigan enabled shall issue ccw ~2002 & detroit is still number one in murder & violent crime, really helped a lot eh wayno?).
Of the ten states with the lowest firearm murder rates, seven are PROGUN states as well, but the combined population of the 7 states is approx 7 million people: FBI's 10 Lowest Firearms Homicide States 1 0.07 Hawaii 2 0.53 New Hampshire 3 0.57 Rhodes Island 4 0.68 South Dakota 5 0.71 Iowa 6 0.75 Vermont 7 0.76 Montana 8 0.82 Minnesota 9 0.90 Maine 10 0.93 North Dakota .. {minnes, RI, hawaii guncontrol}
Those seven 'safe' pro gun states have approx 7 million people combined, which is about the population of new york city. NYC, a relative pin prick on a map, has the same population as ~10% of the land mass of the continental US. States with low population density generally have low murder & violent crime rates due scarcity of people, alaska notable exception due 'frontier' state, & most alaskans actually urban, located in a few 'urban' city areas.
St Louis (city) enabled shall issue ccw ~2005 & the next year rose to have the highest violent crime rate in the country, surpassing detroit that year. Montana enabled shall issue ccw 1991 & since then her violent crime rate has tripled to ~350/100k; West Virginia enabled shall issue about 1980s iirc & since then her violent crime rate has about doubled. Both dakotas v-crime rates have near doubled since shall issue ccw (tho still very low ~150/100k); pennsylvania went from 1989 ccw start year to 2009 with a higher violent crime rate, just 2009 did it marginally fall below. Indiana tends to fluctuate over & below it's start year.
This while all guncontrol states since near the same time, have seen dramatic declines in their violent crime rates (exception hawaii which remained at parity ~250/100k).
Of course the nra & gun lobby almost invariably pick on DC & Chicago as 'failures' of guncontrol, & cherry pick Maryland as well as having a high violent crime rate - in other words the gun lobby consistently complains of the smell from guncontrol areas while ignoring the stink in their own backyard.
MORE GUNS MORE LIES

(16 posts)AR, MO, and NC all have Dem governors. A few others like PA, MI, TN and OK just had Dem Govs who finished 8 yr terms in 2011. Most major cities with large amounts of gun violence like Chicago, DC, Philly, Detroit, St Louis, etc... have Dem mayors.
This really isn't a partisan issue
If you look at the states with the highest firearms murder rates and those with the lowest there's also another factor that seems to be present, but I'll let others determine that one.
