Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will again administer the oath of office to President Barack Obama during his second inauguration this month, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced on Friday.
Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will take the oath officially on Sunday, Jan. 20 and again on Jan. 21 in a ceremonial swearing-in at the Capitol. Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be the fourth woman to administer the oath when she swears in the vice president, the committee said.
I will be honored to again stand on the Inaugural platform and take part in this important American tradition, Obama said in a statement.
I believed strongly that she would make a great Justice, and it was one of the greatest pleasures of my career to be involved in her selection to the Court, Biden said. Above all, Im happy for the chance to be sworn in by a friend and someone I know will continue to do great things.

(3,979 posts)I wonder why there would be any need to take the oath of office again.
They already did so in 2009, so unless they renounced wouldn't that oath still be effective?
(As far as I know the oath contains no time limit or expiration date).

Just like The President the U.S. Senators and the U.S. House Representatives also have to be sworn in and take an oath each time they start a new term after an election.
When one term ends then it is a whole new ball game and they have to start off from scratch by taking the oath to cover their new term.

It's a simple, easily memorized phrase that someone in your job has to recite only once every four years. Show some fucking competence, or take off those cockamamie gold stripes!
No one has worn the gold stripes since Rehnquist died. However, Roberts should wear them. I have to admit I always thought it was cool when the Chief Justice dresses differently.

Hopefully John Roberts brings a card with the oath written on it with his this time.

(25,415 posts)Three women have previously sworn-in presidents and vice presidents: Judge Sarah T. Hughes swore-in President Johnson in 1963; Justice Sandra Day OConnor swore-in Vice President Dan Quayle in 1989; and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg swore-in Vice President Al Gore in 1997.
I should have remembered Ginsburg. I don't think I paid any attention to the inauguration in '89, I was 12! But in '97 I was home from college and watched it with my parents.
