No, there were no "major" sentences like FDR's "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself," or JFK's "ask not what your country can do for you," or even, I will add Lincoln's "with malice toward none."

Besides the first two that you mentioned, how many memorable inaugural comments have there been? Anything from Reagan? Bush I, Bush II?

And yet, I think that "That is our generation's task -- to make these words, these rights, these values of life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness real for every American." will be remembered from today address.

4. I feel Bob and Tom Brokaw have been in the limelight so long

their egos are threatened when others are not in agreement with them. They are in love with their voices. They want to feel revered and it just isn't happening. Throw Peggy Noonan in there with them and maybe they could get together a comedy routine.

7. This criticism

comes from those people that were stalwarts of the old America. President Obama is a symbol of the new America. I wonder what was going through his mind when he looked back at the hundreds of thousands of people that attended his second inauguration. Do you think he saw the new America and what really elected him to office? They certainly were not the electorate of Schieffer's and Brokaw's past America.


It was a coalition of African Americans, Hispanic, whites, Asians and native Americans. It was Dr King's vision of America and he gave a speech that represented it. Those are the people President Obama needs to keep his pledges to and not the coalition of the Republican Party of Schieffer's and Brokaw's past America. They have to make a choice to change with the times or wither on a vine, like the past. You know the saying about how hard it is for the old to change. It is very hard to relinquish power or your preferred status in this country. It is a sign of the times and it doesn't wait on anybody. I for see America's first woman President and probably a Hispanic one in the near future also. This President does not march to their tunes but the sign of the times. President Lincoln and JFK did the same. I would argue all Presidents made those adjustments. Maybe it is time for Scheiffer to also retire and relinquish to new voices up with the times.

14. "We, the people" is the greatest take-away from this Inaugural, IMO.

It consolidates his victory in the presidential election and solidifies his base. It is his greatest asset going forward.
