Related: About this forumPoll: Booker has big edge over Lautenberg for Senate
A new poll released on Sen. Frank Lautenberg's 89th birthday is a mixed bag for the Democrat, with New Jersey voters saying they like the job he's doing but don't think he should run for another term.
Lautenberg gets a 50% job-approval rating in the Quinnipiac Poll released Wednesday, but 45% say he doesn't deserve to be re-elected.
The senator is up for re-election in 2014, and Newark Mayor Cory Booker, a 43-year-old Democrat with a national following, has already taken steps to run for Lautenberg's seat.
.......
In a hypothetical match-up between the two Democrats, Booker leads Lautenberg 51% to 30% in the Quinnipiac Poll. The mayor led the senator by 22 percentage points in a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released earlier this month.

(31,938 posts)He has served his country well! He has served us in NJ well. But I see the Booker thing. It would be a hard vote for me as I feel Lautenberg is much more of a Progressive than a Centrist Liberal (how I define Booker) AND Lautenberg understands what it means to build a business from the ground up (husband is small business owner) - but on the other hand . . .
Booker is young and less likely to die during his tenure.
For folks not in the know - Lautenberg has had some health issues the past few years. Over them now - but I wouldn't want to risk a Christie appointment in the event of his death.

(33,497 posts)Because you also have a GOP governor who could appoint his successor. These politicians want to hang on to the very end. We had Robert Byrd and others die in office in their 90's. He's done a good job but there are times when people have to face the inevitable. I believe the same thing about the US Supreme Court. Some of our elderly liberals should resign in the next year or so, so that Obama can appoint a there replacement.
