The Search for the Last Sane Republican

I’ve hunted big game before. Stalking prey on the grasslands of Africa and hacking through the jungles of South America is old hat as far as I’m concerned. It was a hobby I picked up shortly after being involved in what the authorities called an “embezzlement scheme”, but which I categorized as a reapportionment of resources.

He represented the State of New York in the Senate, and his name was Jacob Javits.
My dad was a journalist for a small town newspaper in upstate NY, and they were
friends for decades, even though my dad was a confirmed Democrat. I never knew
him well at all, but my dad had a lot of respect for him, and I had a lot of respect
for my dad's judgement.

Like the OP implied--now an extinct species.
