2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWTF are you thinking..Ron Wyden?
You are a perfect example of why Democrats are so often considered weak.... Why the hell are you having a conversation with fucking Rand Paul on the floor, who is leading a filibuster against an Obama nomination.
Yea, I get what you are saying and agree with a lot of your points. But Jesus Fucking Christ why are you engaging with Republicans over this debate? Especially when you know that Republicans couldnt give 2 shits over drone strikes. especially If the shoe were on the other shoe and Romney was utilizing Drones against American Citizens who have been thought to be treasonous.......
Do you fucking think you would hear a peep from these same republicans.
Let me remind you of something Ron? Republicans are trying to destroy the POTUS because
he is Black.....
If you want to rage against Drone Attacks then by all means do it. But do it on our turf!!!

(863 posts)Yes, I voted for President Obama. Yes, I contributed to his campaign. Yes I think Rand and his daddy Ron are way out there. But civil liberties for Americans, including the right to not get blown up by a predator drone even if I'm a bad guy American, is worth supporting. All Americans should have the right to confront their accusers and a trial by a jury of their peers.
It goes a long way past elections. It's about the Constitution.
Defending our rights is a 7 day a week, 52 weeks a year, year in and year out, hard slog. Do you think it's OK that President Obama allowed most of the horrible legislation passed by the Bush regime to remain as the law of the land?
As an Oregonian, I support Senator Wyden.

(8,515 posts)Wyden shouldnt caucus with Republicans... Especially because if Romney or Bush were doing the same thing, you wouldnt hear a bit of protest out of them...

(863 posts)Well, during the buildup to the Iraq war Ron Paul did indeed do more than a bit of protesting even though it was a Republican regime in power. I am not a fan of the Paul's brand of libertarianism - their view of how society should be organized is a hellish one. But on foreign wars and protection of civil liberties I'm always happy to gain allies. This issue has a long history BTW including the views articulated by the web site antiwar.com and how we on the left wing of American politics align ourselves vs the antiwar right wing.

(45,319 posts)Following the bill signing, Dr. Coburn and Senator Obama released the following statement:
This legislation marks a small but important step in the effort to change the culture in Washington, D.C. American taxpayers soon will be equipped with a significant tool that will make it much easier to hold elected officials accountable for the way taxpayer money is spent. The army of bloggers, editorialists and concerned citizens who worked diligently to see this bill pass deserve all the credit and praise today, the senators said.

Sorry to link to Coburn's site, but if a Senator working with the other Party is inherently wrong, then what of Tom 'Lesbians in the Bathrooms' Coburn and Senator Obama?

(22,000 posts)It was clear he was agreeing with Paul about the use of drones. I don't think he supported the use of the filibuster.

(45,319 posts)He has been a constant critic of the post 9-11 abuses in security, civil liberties and warfare. He is defending the Constitution, which is what he is sworn to do, elected to do by the people of Oregon.
I have to ask the OP if he posts outrage when the President engages with Republicans, takes meeting which McCain leaves all grinning and thumbs up thrilled that 'entitlements are on the table'? The same McCain the voters rejected? The one Obama defeated?
Just saying. The President speaks more kindly about Republicans and calls for 'bipartisanship' more than any Democrat in my memory. Does the OP think Obama is wrong to do so?
