http://my.firedoglake.com/tomthumb/2013/03/09/comfortable-myths-about-poverty-british-churches-fight-back/If our society misrepresents those who are at its margins,
blaming them for their poverty and ignoring the massive
injustices at work, then we are all set to fail. We will see
greater depths of poverty; greater suffering as children are
entrenched in circumstances which are damaging to body,
mind and soul. We will see a society which is unsustainable
and divided, where those with power or privilege are willfully
blind to those without.

(58,656 posts)times of great wealth inequality tend to lead to times of violence and trouble. The end result has not always been a correction in the income inequality, unfortunately. Most often, it is just another minority segment of the populace that takes over from the old.

(649 posts)Our country. Our voice. We vote.
What about drawing a line in the sand with the notion that we are sovereign, and we vote.
Occupy sanity.

(55,981 posts)Pres Obama? That means 62% of eligible voters either didnt give a shit or voted for dip-shit Romney.
Also, the oligarchs number one political party is working night and day to eliminate many of our votes. If we dont fix that, kiss our "representative" government goodbye.
Besides often our choices are oligarch puppet number one vs. oligarch puppet number two. So yeah we get to vote, but the 1% win anywayz.

(649 posts)And please don't call me series. I am here on your democratic underground because I believe we can get people to vote, and I'm not going away until we do.

(39,909 posts)...believe that voting won't change their desperate economic situation,
and they have some good cause for arriving at that conclusion.
Voter Apathy is NOT the fault of the voters.
It IS the product of our system.
When the Working Class & The Poor realize that WE have more in common with each other
than we have in common with our Ruling Elite 1% Class,
THEN we WILL have "change".
As long as we are divided by Fox News and two dominant Political parties that control the elections and the Political Debate in the USA, not much will change.

(55,981 posts)as influenced by elite theory. Elite Theory says that all organizations and all societies are ruled by a minority of elites. I cant disagree. The best we can hope for is to convince the elites that it is in their best interest they not let us die.

(12,861 posts)I believe, though, it matters that we understand how they think. For example, SCOTUS will probably overturn the Voting Rights Act. Why? Because "those people" are somehow racially entitled to vote and are not deserving of the franchise. Knowing this now gives us the ability to plan long-term about how to blunt their strategy. As you say, voting is important, and they will attempt to stop us from doing that. They already tried but the VRA stopped them. It may not be there next time.
Know your enemy, and plan.

(649 posts)We have loads of people in the United States of America

Now, if you redefine "all" to mean "some," then you can get really wide agreement.
