Briefly--
The lead character, Katagiri, a modest samurai who has never killed anyone and has no wish to do so, is ordered by his chief retainer to kill an old friend, Yaichiro, who chose to go to Edo to seek advancement and has been returned as a prisoner, having been accused of trying to overthrow the Shogun. ... Katagiri is honor bound to obey the command.
Katagiri asks Yaichiro again and again not to make him kill his 'old friend' but to commit seppuku--hara kiri..but to no avail.. finally Katagiri must fight him..
Each time his Yaichiro attacks, Katagiri backs away. He does this again, and agai as his friend continues to attack, (he has also just been taught a secret move by his old sensei). This move is basically to look away and turn your back.. which he finally does. When his friend, surprised, and thinking he sees the opening he wants, attacks, Katagiri spins around with a slashing blow across the Yaichiro's midsection. Total surprise!
If one is forced to fight the Republican Party to the death, THIS is the way to do it.
