Conservatives dont just complain loudly, endlessly and inaccurately about liberal media bias. They also train right-leaning journalists to make their way into the supposedly hostile terrain of Beltway media. And one of the most famous alums of a conservative media training program is now a major star at a network news outlet: ABCs senior political correspondent Jonathan Karl.
Karl came to mainstream journalism via the Collegiate Network, an organization primarily devoted to promoting and supporting right-leaning newspapers on college campuses (Extra!, 9-10/91)such as the Rutgers paper launched by the infamous James OKeefe (Political Correction, 1/27/10). The network, founded in 1979, is one of several projects of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, which seeks to strengthen conservative ideology on college campuses. William F. Buckley was the ISIs first president, and the current board chair is American Spectator publisher Alfred Regnery. Several leading right-wing pundits came out of Collegiate-affiliated papers, including Ann Coulter, Dinesh D'Souza, Michelle Malkin, Rich Lowry and Laura Ingraham (Washington Times, 11/28/04).

(83,754 posts)Karl is often tapped by ABC to offer factcheck segments, and the results frequently reinforce some of the misinformation that is supposed to be corrected, or attempt to spread the blame to both sides. During the debate over extending the Bush tax cuts, conservatives complained that a tax increase on the top 2 percent would actually be a crushing burden on small business owners. Karls factcheck interviewed two small business owners who claimed they would be adversely affected. One said an increase in his personal tax bill would cost him between $20,000 and $40,000, and the other claimed a potential tax bill increase of $120,000. If these estimates were true, Karls small businessmen were making enormous amounts of moneyupwards of $700,000 a year for the first, nearly $3 million for the second (FAIR Action Alert, 9/13/10). That was never explained to ABC viewers.
He belongs on faux news!
Thanks Cha~

(297,203 posts)After a stint at the New York Post, Karl soon found his way to CNN, but he was still connected to ideological pursuits; he was a board member at the right-leaning youth-oriented Third Millennium group and at the Madison Center for Educational Affairswhich, like the Collegiate Network, seeks to strengthen young conservative journalism. After moving to ABC in 2003, Karl contributed several pieces to the neo-con Weekly Standard, such as his April 4, 2005 article praising Bush Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as out to make her mark with the vigorous pursuit of the presidents freedom and democracy agenda.
Which made a good fit for his "ideological pursuits".

(12,272 posts)Corruption on the inside. I understand the complaints over the process the Justice Department used to approve the subpoenas for Associated Press telephone records, but with these moles everywhere, letting a third party in on the plan may have been too risky.

"Does this mean that Jonathan Karl is not a good reporter? No, it doesnt. One can have an ideological bent and still be an excellent reporter. If not, most reporters would be out of work. However, its troubling that our media doesnt require the disclosure of this bent (thaanks, Fox). But the real problem comes from him allowing his desire for an anti-Obama scandal to be true to cause him to drop his standards. His crime isnt being taken in by a source with a grudge or running with that source, even, though youd think he would want to get a second, non partisan source to corroborate the claims of a Republican from Capitol Hill.
Jonathan Karl did something unforgivable when he claimed to have reviewed the emails.
Journalism experts are not impressed with Karl, and say that he has made himself vulnerable to being used for political purposes. They call his reporting at best sloppy and at worse a deliberate attempt to conceal the nature of his source. Heres a roundup from Media Matters:

(54,375 posts)I don't get American TV here. But this sounds exactly like the kind of thing Karl Rove and/or Rupert Murdoch would be involved in. If you don't want to put up the cash to buy ABC, then infiltrate it KGB style and put in your own propagandist as a "fact-checker."
It seems like having this guy as a "fact-checker" for a major news outlet is equivalent to having Josef Göbbels as "fact checker" for the Jewish Defense League. Nice trick if you can pull it off, and it does look like someone pulled it off.
But, OK, now the word is out, and he has been fully exposed. Is ABC just going to stick its head in the sand and hope that everyone will have forgotten by the time they pull it back out again?

(54,375 posts)But I have been station chief for Europe for my outfit for a while now. I am married to one of the friendly natives, and she prefers to live here. My work takes me to a different country practically every day, so it really doesn't matter to me. One of our daughters has a job with a travel schedule like mine (drives her boyfriend nuts), is based out of Frankfurt. The other one has a job for slave wages (for New York City), but loves Manhattan and doesn't want to live anywhere else. There are a lot of airports in our lives.

(54,375 posts)I have to be able to answer the phone and talk to whoever is on the other end in German, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Swedish or Catalan, and go to those places at a moment's notice if need be. I can't find a replacement, and I've been doing this for decades now. Next week, I have to be in Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, and "someplace in the Balkans." I gotta slow down.
On the other hand, I am NOT cut out for a desk job. Not in Washington, not in Dallas, not ANYwhere. Due to an oddball set of circumstances plus the professions of generations that have gone before me, I have a unique set of acquaintances that I like to keep up with as well. Many of them are now in their 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s, and most of them aren't slowing down any more than I am.
Like Warren Zevon sang, "I'll sleep when I'm dead," which, come to think of it, he now is.
