The Republican nominee for lieutenant governor in Virginia says that he is a Christian and has no reason to apologize for his history against of hate speech against LGBT people, liberals and abortion providers.
It was only after African-American minister E.W. Jackson won the nomination at the Virginia Republican Party Convention last week that many became aware of his history of saying gay people were perverted and sick people psychologically.
Homosexuality is a horrible sin, it poisons culture, it destroys families, it destroys societies; it brings the judgment of God unlike very few things that we can think of, he said last year.
He has also called Democrats slave masters and compared Planned Parenthood to the Ku Klux Klan.
Liberalism and their ideas have done more to kill black folks whom they claim so much to love than the Ku Klux Klan, lynching and slavery and Jim Crow ever did, now thats a fact, Jackson said in a 2012 interview.
On Tuesday, Jackson told reporters that he had no intention of apologizing.
I say the things that I say because Im a Christian, not because I hate anybody, but because I have religious values that matter to me, Jackson told reporters during a campaign event in Fredericksburg, according to The Washington Post. Attacking me because I hold to those principles is attacking every church-going person, every family thats living a traditional family life, everybody who believes that we all deserve the right to live.
So I dont have anything to rephrase or apologize for. I would just say people should not paint me as one-dimensional.
Watch this video of Jackson at a campaign stop in Fredericksburg on May 22, 2013.

(5,756 posts)This guy presents so many interesting facets to the election. First, he's an African-American in what's got to be the original slave state. Yet he's such a rampant RW in-your-face "Christian" conservative and jerk when it comes to social issues. He seems to be trying to match Pat Robertson for twisted crazy "Christian" talk (I put Christian in quotes because I don't know many who are this radical).
Love this: I say the things that I say because Im a Christian..." Because in his whacked out brand of Christianity he's never wrong and never sorry. Sounds like more of the Christian Taliban to me.
So will he be a drag or a plus on Cuccinelli?

(2,730 posts)the worse kind of man there is and an opportunist. I think he would probably sell his mother into slavery for the crumbs from his slave masters. He is the kinda overseer his masters would have loved if he was born in the antebellum South and probably would have been at their side in the Civil War. That is what I think his spirit is. There are evil men of every color that prey on the defenseless. They are very easy to recognize among their own people. Remember the Jewish overseer in Moses. That is the spirit he represents. He would not represent Christ but Satan.

New International Version (NIV)
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: God, I thank you that I am not like other peoplerobbers, evildoers, adulterersor even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.
13 But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
14 I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

(3,282 posts)He imposes his religious insanity on the group of which he calls himself a member. Any attacks on his hateful or horrifying speech are an "attacking every church-going person, every family thats living a traditional family life." What I'd love to see is a large group of real church-going Christians in his constituency rising up to denounce not only his statements, but also him as a candidate.
Also, as far as I can remember, being Christian does not mean you're infallible. The only person who's allowed to claim that, and only under certain circumstances, is the Pope. Not that I believe that in particular, either.
Man, this guy sounds like a mess.

And the more you talk about Jesus, the less you actually have to act like him.

(9,288 posts)How about saying he doesn't represent your brand of Christianity? Or he only represents the crazy right wing of your faith?
Saying he is not a true Christian can be construed to be offensive to non-Christians. As in "No one of OUR religion would be like that, he is actually a non-Christians trying to dirty our name! He is one of YOU!"
Im sure thats not what you mean, and that you just meant to defend your religion; but, it could be construed that way.
It is called the No True Scotsman fallacy.
Beacool
(30,247 posts)These idiots who are bigoted and hateful are not following Christ's teachings. It's as simple as that. Regardless what version of Christianity they adhere to, Christ was about loving others, not hating them. Which New Testament is this guy, and others like him, reading?
LostOne4Ever
(9,288 posts)That they are reading a bad translation or mis-interpeting what the scriptures are saying.
For instance Matthew 10:34-39
34 Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law
36 a mans enemies will be the members of his own household.[c]
37 Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
This could easily be mis-interpreted by some, especially those looking to support their own biases, to means something other than Jesus actual message. This does not mean they are not christians, just that they are misguided no?
For instance many Christians use this verse from Matthew 5:17-20 to justify dogmas from the old testament:
17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Its great that there are Christians out there correcting their misunderstanding, but it is possible to misunderstand the scriptures, and saying they are not true Christians can be taken to be offensive to non-Christians such as myself.
Yes Jesus said many great things about loving one and another, but they have lost sight of that.
So maybe it is better to say they don't represent your brand of Christianity rather than to say they are not true Christians. Misguided as they may be those might be sincerely held beliefs...ones that Liberal Christians like you know better than to make, and that you can correct them on.

John2
(2,730 posts)He is a liar, and I would not apologize to him. I would like to hear his evidence Liberals has killed more Blacks than the things he pointed out. I would also present my evidence to him to show he is a liar starting with the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Middle Passage to the New World, right on up to the Jim Crow South. This man is ignorant.
LostOne4Ever
(9,288 posts)But could we please avoid saying he's not a christian? Thats slightly insulting to those of us who are also not Christians. How about he's completely perverting the faith or that he got the wrong understanding of the purpose of the religion or something like that?
Again this is a No True Scotsman fallacy.
Thank you.
