As long as Reince is around, expect no huge GOP wins. Long live Priebus!
Without politics, he would be running insurance fraud scams somewhere.

Under Michael Steele in 2010, they took the most seats ever turned over in the House during an off year election. Came close to taking the Senate also. Look what's happened under this clown - they lost - by a wide margin - what should have been a very winnable election.

I'm sure Steele's supporters portrayed him as the brilliant architect of victory.

Evidently, however, quite a few other Republican party functionaries saw Steele as a bad party chair who happened to have been warming the seat when factors beyond his control led to Republican wins.

I admit that I don't follow RNC internal politics all that closely. Still, I don't know of anything Steele did that could reasonably be pointed to as a key factor in the 2010 win.

Similarly, I don't think the 2012 loss was Priebus's fault. Perhaps the Freepers would say that he manipulated the nomination process to favor the RINO Romney, and that without Priebus there would have been some kind of Santorum-DeMint ticket that would have cruised to victory, but I don't share their fond delusion that the U.S. electorate is eager to vote for a "true" conservative.

Priebus is indeed a clown. He has a tough assignment, though. I mean, what would you do if you were RNC Chair?

Michael Steele was made head of the RNC for one reason alone - the color of his skin. I hate his politics but the man does understand what the problems of his party are. The freeper hoards actually think Sarah Palin would cruise to a victory (she would have beaten Pres Obama) so they are obviously not reality based carbon units.

The problem with the republicans when it comes to national elections is that their fringe scares the shit out of normal people who include most moderates and independents - our fringe just gets laughed at. With the teabaggers in firm control of the pub party, I'm not really too concerned about national elections for the moment. The problem is the house of reps that has been redistricted to a point where it's nearly impossible to get rid somebody.

Steele's great error as RNC chair was suggesting that they needed to look in the mirror: moderate, contain their extremists, confront the racism and sexism of some within their coalition and become more than the party of reactionary tax-cutters and religious zealots in order to present a cohesive and attractive option to those moderates who don't really fit the Democratic label but reflexively vote against the GOP's poor image.

In short, he was presenting an argument that the GOP needs to shift to attempt to become more viable in the places the GOP needs to be able to contest electorally to remain viable in national elections.

For that, he was stabbed in the back by his #2, Priebus, and ousted by the people now running the GOP ship aground to get as much for tax-reform, ALEC and baby Jesus as they can before they sink into permanent irrelevance and second-party status, controlling maybe the House with both the Presidency and Senate out of reach.
