2016 Postmortem

Washington (CNN) -- A new national poll in the battle for the 2016 Democratic and Republican presidential nominations indicates what you would expect: Hillary Clinton is the overwhelming Democratic frontrunner, and there's no real leader among the possible GOP White House hopefuls.
But if you get beyond the obvious, the CNN/ORC International survey released Monday becomes more revealing.
It showed 65% of Democrats and independents who lean toward that party say they would likely back Clinton as their presidential nominee. Vice President Joe Biden comes in a distant second, at 10%, with freshman Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts at 7%, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo at 6%, and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley at 2%.
The CNN survey is in line with previous polls from other organizations conducted earlier this year that indicated Clinton, who has not said whether she'll run, is far ahead of all the other possible Democratic candidates.

(16,423 posts)And that won't happen anytime soon.
With an election-system proportional to popular vote, a discontent wing could break away from a major party and KEEP its voters.
For example: There are elections in Germany this Sunday.
The two major parties make up 60-70% of the vote. (A grand coalition is already rumored as a plan B.)
The rest is split among 5 noteworthy minor parties. Socialists and Greens will score ~15% each, the capitalists ~5% and everybody is curious to see how the pirates and the new isolationist party will perform.
For liberals to become a major political force, they would need liberal democrats to win lots of district-majorities for them.
And liberals aren't popular enough for winning a majority on their own.
With a proportional system, liberals could form their own party and put people in Congress WITHOUT winning majorities ANYWHERE.
Then they would be able to negotiate with the bigger democratic party, on which topics they can count on liberal votes and which ones are a no-go.

(25,592 posts)A Liberal only has to win over or take over the Democratic Party leadership. The Democratic party need to stop pushing DLC, DINO's, corporatists, etc., and start thinking about the welfare of this country for a change.

The report should be out soon, or is overdue as it was to be completed 'end of summer'.
Hey Cnn, why don't you do this instead of campaigning for her?
Yah, okay, we understand. She would be great for yours and her need for conflict and war and this story wouldn't make her look so good. Yah, ok, we understand how this works.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505263_162-57588456/state-department-memo-reveals-possible-cover-ups-halted-investigations/
CBS News' John Miller reports that according to an internal State Department Inspector General's memo, several recent investigations were influenced, manipulated, or simply called off. The memo obtained by CBS News cited eight specific examples. Among them: allegations that a State Department security official in Beirut "engaged in sexual assaults" on foreign nationals hired as embassy guards and the charge and that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's security detail "engaged prostitutes while on official trips in foreign countries" -- a problem the report says was "endemic."
The memo also reveals details about an "underground drug ring" was operating near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and supplied State Department security contractors with drugs.
Aurelia Fedenisn, a former investigator with the State Department's internal watchdog agency, the Inspector General, told Miller, "We also uncovered several allegations of criminal wrongdoing in cases, some of which never became cases."
In such cases, DSS agents told the Inspector General's investigators that senior State Department officials told them to back off, a charge that Fedenisn says is "very" upsetting.

(8,515 posts)The SOS has a hell of a lot of work to do and cannot be bogged down into situations that are not of her making. However, there should be oversight. I have no idea whose responsibility this is within the State Department. Foggy Bottom is huge, so I'm sure someone does have to do this. Hillary was very busy attempting to repair the bad years of Bush diplomatically.
Our Government is also too big for Obama to be responsible for every thing that happens at the IRS, or at the State Department. No one person can control everything. She had a job to do and did it well. What's your real beef?

(2,529 posts)This mythical being of theirs doesn't exist. They want a hero that will bring down what they hate the most--Big Government. Except for the part of it that's deposited to their banks every month and paid out to their doctors. And even their biggest fervor, their war mania, has become subdued. It's why during the last primary, they kept having a Flavor of the Week with the idiots in the GOP clown car and then wound up holding their noses and voting for Romney. A majority of them polled said they voted for him because of his "electability," not because they thought he was the best candidate. They might as well just put up an avatar and vote for that. It would probably generate a lot more enthusiasm.

(335 posts)We could do a lot worse than Hillary, but what a disappointment a progressive can't win over a former Wal-Mart Director.
Bill Clinton supported some terrible legislation for the country. His 'third war' seemed to largely mean 'do what the rich guys want, and you can get their money AND liberal votes!'
He did some better things also - his first budget had a tax increase on the top 2% that passed by one vote with zero Republicans.
But what is Hillary's claim to fame, really, other than being 'the first woman President' if she wins and Bill's Wife and having held positions of Senator and Secretary of State that I can't really remember one thing good she did in?
It seems like that 'famous for being famous' things, popularity not for any special reason.
Wouldn't we far better off with a Howard Dean, or a Joe Biden? (Or maybe even Elizabeth Warren?)

(15 posts)gop prospects, though, will probably end up including the usual suspects: ted cruz, rand paul, chris christie, jeb bush, and some random woman and/or minority with little to no qualifications thrown in there just for some good ol' token fun.
