2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAmericans will find out the truth about Obamacare and the GOP knows it,
I have spent some hours on line researching what Obamacare will mean for me and mine. My husband and I are both self employed, and for our family we pay almost $1600 a month presently---slightly mitigated by the fact that it is 100% deductible.
On October first the exchanges will open for membership, plans starting in January of 2014. And on that month, my family will pay $600 less a month with GOLD coverage. The choices are Catastrophic, Bronze, Silver and Gold, in that order.
It ain't single payer, but it is $600 less a month for good coverage, no pre-existing condition screening, important for us as my husband has one, and this includes keeping our son on our insurance. I'll take it. (These rates are specific to my state and one of 4 or 5 company/HMO exhange plans being offered so far.)
So last night we got together with three other neighbors who do not have health care through work, and are paying through the nose for it, and looked up everyone's options. They will all save at least what my family will, some more due to their ages.
I realize this is highly anecdotal, but eventually what my neighbors and my family found out yesterday, will happen across this land. Not to mention the doors left open in the ACA to encourage the evolution of single payer, state by state.

(22,140 posts)(we are self insured) and they vaguely mention the "health exchanges", but not how to find one. I believe they are hoping they won't lose customers, but if their offerings are not competitive, we are definitely going to switch insurers.
I have talked with my neighbors about this (they are Republican) and they are very confused about what the ACA means for them.

(16,646 posts)I'd hazard a guess that ANYONE that is currently buying insurance "retail" and has a pre-existing condition will save big. Most other folks well north of 30 years old will save as well, although probably not "big". Which is all good, as long as the folks from 25-35 ALSO sign up, otherwise the system will collapse of its own weight.
For folks that AREN'T currently buying retail, they may be surprised to find out how much health care will cost them, even with insurance. The premiums may be low, especially with the subsidies, but they might find out just how expensive it can be to have insurance, when you get sick. If they are feeling forced to have the insurance, they may get a bit peeved by the whole thing.
But the GOP knows this. Once people have their subsidized insurance, even the "peeved", trying to take it away will be politically dead on arrival.

(37,540 posts)because the Republicans torpedoed HillaryCare, back in the 90's. We've been forced to pay trillions more in healthcare because Republicans work for Big Health Ins., Big Pharma, Big Oil, etc.
I agree that the real Day of Reckoning is coming and I make this same point to everyone when the subject of ObamaCare comes up.
I'm paying $1400/mo, so you bet I'm going to be looking at my options on the Fed Exchange.

(5,049 posts)Yesterday one of our local TV 'News" stations tweeted the latest false Forbes Propaganda about the ACA. I complained and asked them why they were acting like sock puppets for the TeaPublicans. The asked why I was so "huffy" - after all they "re-tweet all kinds of stuff..." I pointed out it took me two minutes on line to discover what was so wrong with the Forbes article (ACA will cost family of four $7,450) and wondered why a "News" organization couldn't be bothered checking their facts - and of course - they hung up on me.
If re-tweeting propaganda = news we are in for a long haul on the ACA. Please talk to your neighbors, correct false assumptions, and challenge lies when you hear them.
