Romney’s Advice To Students: Borrow Money From Your Parents

By Annie-Rose Strasser on Apr 27, 2012 at 4:08 pm

If you’re young and you want to start your own business, Mitt Romney’s has some advice from you: Borrow money from your parents. At a “lecture” for students at Otterbein University in Ohio today, Mitt Romney told students that, his friend, Jimmy John, started a business by borrowing $20,000 from his parents at a low interest rate. Romney suggested anyone in the audience could do the same:

This kind of devisiveness, this attack of success, is very different than what we’ve seen in our country’s history. We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.

2. Question:

What happens if the parents don't have the money because they're being forced to work low-wage jobs or, in some cases, multiple low-wage jobs to just keep a roof overhead and food in the pantry (oh, and gas in the car if they need to drive to go to work, etc.)?

Easy to ask parents for college tuition/businesses if you're a member of the Bush (or Romney) families but probably not for many other people.

I'm tired of hearing excuses like "I was just a baby at the time!" or "Wait a minute - you don't get to choose your parents". And don't go whining about how there's no money - do people really need two kidneys? (Do I really have to add the tag?).

I swear it's getting harder to tell Onion news stories from the real thing.

Why didn't I think to go up to my public-school-teacher parents and go "Hey, mom, dad, I want to start a business. You have $20K in spare cash I could borrow?"

What a clueless fucking piece of shit.

My parents were not rich like your parents Mitt. They were not able to provide me or my three siblings a stock portfolio. But they worked hard to get me a college education. And during college I worked two jobs.

I know about their finances and I can't recall a time they might have had a spare $20,000 to lend me. Hell, there was never even a time they had $20k in the bank.

Are you really that stupid and out of touch with people who are not worth $250 million? And you think we really want to elect someone who's view is so out of touch with the majority of US citizens who average somewhere around $40,000 a year in income? You obviously don't understand how most of us live and how many of us live paycheck to paycheck. So how can we possibly count on you to implement policies that have some empathy for us?

After all, you made many of your millions as a corporate raider buying companies and laying off we common people. It's on tape - you said you liked firing people.

He thought the auto industry should lick a finger and hold it in the air and money would roll in. Instead of elevators for his vehicles he needs one to elevate his awareness of the world around him.

I had a republican tell me yesterday if Obama was re-elected gas prices would go over $4, I ask him if he knew what the price was in the summer of 2008 and he thought $2.50, then I told him it was $4.12, of course faux news let him down so I suggested he look it up.

have made quite sure that most parents don't have 20K to lend. Only the rich think of 20K as chump change that most parents just have laying around. Beyond that, 20K would barely remodel my kitchen. It is not enough to start most businesses.
