Chris Christie/Susana Martinez: Is This Your 2016 Republican Ticket?

The governors of New Mexico and New Jersey are becoming fast friends. Now, maybe it seems strange that the governor of New Jersey, leading his little-known opponent by an enormous margin, would bring in a faraway officeholder with much less political star power to help him close out his campaign. There's an immediate political reason why it makes sense plus a couple of speculative ones—and they all have to do with 2016.

First, the immediate one: Christie spent the final weeks of the race trying to run up his margin of victory in order to reinforce his case for a 2016 presidential run. Martinez's job was to show up in heavily Hispanic areas like Union City and help turn out the Latino vote. It worked—even as Hispanics turn against the Republican Party nationwide, Christie beat Democrat Barbara Buono 51-45 in the demographic, according to exit polls.

But Christie's embrace of Martinez makes sense in the longer run too. As Brett LoGiurato points out, the two have a lot in common, setting aside the 2,000 miles between Trenton and Santa Fe: They're young (for politicians), moderate, blue-state Republicans who have worked with Democratic legislators on some issues (while clashing on others). They're both former prosecutors, too. Whether that makes Martinez good vice-presidential material is a somewhat different question. She was mentioned as a contender for the No. 2 slot on Mitt Romney's ticket last year, and as a Hispanic woman she'd be a boost to a GOP that doesn't want to be seen as the party of old white men. In any case, the New Mexico press hasn't failed to notice Martinez's rising star. In fact, the Democrats with whom the governor has supposedly had such a good working relationship unloaded to the Santa Fe New Mexican in a piece Sunday. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/11/chris-christie-susana-martinez-is-this-your-2016-republican-ticket/281360/

Lets concentrate on 2014 and getting a majority in both houses of Congress. 2016 will take care of itself. Remember Pres Guiliani?

and as I recall, she has a brother with special needs who she takes care of and said she would not be able to move to Washington because he was unable to go also.

5. I doubt much of all this rests with Christie

If Roger Ailes, Rupert Murdoch, the Kochs and Sheldon Adelson all get together and decide they have a better chance with Christie than with any other Republican to capture the White House in 2016, then he WILL BE their nominee. Let me re-emphasize: he will be THEIR nominee--just like Romney eventually was. That party is directed by their money and their media arm. If Fox and Frauds say it's Christie for the next two and a half years, then that's who it'll be. They may not yet have enough clout to have him win automatically in the general election, but I bet they can make him the nominee if they all agree that is what they want.

7. I don't see it. She'd definitely be the Republican's answer to Texas' Castros and a Hispanic rising

star, to be sure.

She and Jeb Bush, that's a scary ticket especially given his family's presence and power in nearby Texas. Christie...not so much. Not nationally electable, IMO. Call it his weight, his Jersey Shore attitude, his anger...which likely hides high blood pressure, soon coming his unvetted political past, whatever, but he's just not presidential. Americans want their president to look and be healthy...thus the annual physical exam.

10. True, and I'm hoping against hope that Julian Castro is the Democratic VP candidate.

But many Americans, especially the older ones, pre-judge (weight, race, age, etc.) more than they even admit to themselves. And the health problems that go with decades of obesity, the stomach banding procedure, and the sometimes drastic lifestyle/personal self-image changes, don't bode well, and that's not prejudice. I've been around it, and it's difficult and takes time.

Either way, it's good news for Hispanics to be finally have visibility in a national race.

The plan might be to let Christie battle teabaggers before the primaries begin and possibly the first couple debates. They bloody each other to the point none of them looks like a contender anymore. All the while Jeb is waiting, saying he's not interested. Then miraculously the big powerful party bosses "persuade" him to run. Out comes Jeb on a white horse to save the country and running out of "civic duty" he "sacrifices" himself for "his country"
