With SCOTUS considering contraception requirements for health care, conservatives are approaching another landmineBRIAN BEUTLER
After Todd Akin uttered the fateful words that destroyed his Senate campaign in August of last year, everyone in the GOP wanted a tug at the rope as they tied him to the train tracks. Almost every major figure in the party condemned him. Many asked him to step aside and allow someone else to run as the GOPs Missouri candidate.
The Republican half of the legitimate rape pile-on was a desperate, but ultimately failed attempt to portray Akins comments about rape as an unfortunate case of bad-appleism. Much better to attack him for suggesting that some rapes might actually be righteous (which he didnt do) than for clumsily expressing what many Republicans genuinely (and wrongly) believe: that some rapes are less morally reprehensible than others, and that when a man perpetrates a so-called forcible rape, it wont result in a pregnancy.
That belief system didnt disappear just because Republicans blackballed Akin. And the fact that religious Republicans learned from Akins experience that theyre better off keeping their mouths shut about a whole host of issues doesnt mean that the GOPs latent Akinism wont flare up again.
In fact, it inevitably will. And the Supreme Courts coming consideration of the Affordable Care Acts contraception requirement almost guarantees that some prominent conservative will break out with a case of the Akins before the 2014 election.

(3,544 posts)Akins was slammed big time for the first week. Then things cooled down. That first week, many of the GOP disassociated with him for his comments. Denial all the way. It was like the idiot went on air, confirmed the GOP's stance on the war with women, then said ooops. They believe and support the war on women, but just can't talk about it, as it will let the cat out of the bag again. The entire GOP is nothing more than snakes in the grass. Don't let them inside!!!!
I agree. It will happen again.

(3,544 posts)This idiot was in the lead (I believe it was double digits). After his remarks, he lost miserably. Being from MO, I am one thankful person he is not in power.

(2,529 posts)Texas teabaggers are especially virulent in their gender and race politics. I'm hoping that they'll really lay it on thick and cause a backlash. I'm so sick of these right-wing loons that have high-jacked my state for the last couple of decades. I want something better for my grandchildren.

Can't look. Just the name makes me sick. Teabaggers are going to run the campaign ugly meter into the red zone.

(145,168 posts)I know Greg and he is a nasty human being. Greg is encouraging this type of crap because he thinks that it will motivate the tea party base. I am hoping that Greg's tactics including #abortionbarbie will alienate women voters.
