Santorum: Huckabee Comment On Women's Libidos Was 'Off The Cuff' + Pelosi: Huckabee's Remark Wouldn'

CATHERINE THOMPSON – JANUARY 24, 2014, 7:52 AM EST

Rick Santorum, who is no stranger to gaffes, said Thursday that he thinks former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's (R) headline-grabbing remarks about women's libidos was poorly worded because Huckabee speaks "off the cuff."

CNN's "Crossfire" host Stephanie Cutter asked Santorum whether he agreed that Democrats tell women "they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government," as Huckabee told an audience at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting.

"I think what Gov. Huckabee was saying is that we've seen an unprecedented assault by the Democrats against Republicans claiming there is a war on women," Santorum said, adding that Republicans and Democrats mostly agree on access to contraception even if they do not agree on reproductive and abortion rights in general.

"That's one of the things that's most frustrating, is there isn't a lot of disagreement on access to contraception," he said. "Whether the government should pay for it, there is a disagreement."

Pelosi: Huckabee's Remark Wouldn't Have Passed Muster 100 Years Ago

TOM KLUDT – JANUARY 24, 2014, 6:27 AM EST1216

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Mike Huckabee's head-scratching remark about women and their "libidos" would have been a retrograde sentiment even a century ago.

One of Capitol Hill's most outspoken supporters of women's reproductive rights, Pelosi used Twitter on Thursday to zing the former Arkansas governor.

Even 100 years ago, it would have been hard to imagine a man making a statement as ridiculous as what Mr. Huckabee said today.

Huckabee made his bizarre comment Thursday at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting.

O'Donnell showed a clip from last Sundays' Huckabee radio cast. Same exact lines, from his teleprompter. He wrote it, practiced it and delivered it, deliberately. What a douche!

Glad you're here! No kidding - what a douche! I notice, yet again, it's ALWAYS about those mean awful icky temptresses and all the mean awful icky things WE always do. There's never any mention about the men's part of all this over-active libido crap. SHEESH is that tiresome! This gas giant calls himself a Reverend. Says he's a man of God. And he claims to be a Christian. So why is he still too thick to remember that thing about that single legendary incident in the Bible telling of an event described as a Virgin Birth? Every other birth known to human history had a man somehow involved, did it not? Or does he not realize that, being a self-anointed "authority" on the Christian tradition?

remarks. Huckabee was telling women to NOT HAVE SEX, even in marriage, if they wanted to control their own reproduction. At least that's how it sounded. If he'd phrased it as not expecting the government to pay for protection (as I assume he meant it), it would be bad enough. I thought the birth control issue was settled nearly a half century ago, even among "thinking" Catholics, whatever their lip-service. Disagreement on abortion, I could always understand, but birth control in a crowded world...? This issue is insane, and a matter of survival of the human race. Santorum, however, is not off the hook after having started the issue. As the public knows, his wife once had an abortion, but with all the right-wing exceptions and excuses in place for her. No wonder our nation is falling behind the rest of the civilized, modern world.
