I hate to be "nit-picky" but "The Wire" was an HBO production.
I watched every episode when it was running on HBO and my wife brought me the box set last Christmas. I've watched all five seasons within a two week period one time.
You are correct, The Wire is a great depiction of how urban life is, especially in Baltimore.
