(94,552 posts)I've regularly brought up the hopelessness of investing in losing causes (especially when there are far more winnable seats with equally deserving candidates who will lose out) and all I get back is that I'm defeatist. Some people just like the emotional pull of "sticking it" to their enemies, regardless of the end result.

Every Republican should be challenged. No matter what.
Make people think a bit. The more often Democrats challenge Republicans, the more often a Democrat has a chance to win!
And when Democrats talk about the issues and introduce die-hard Republicans to what being a Democrat is really about, the ideas of Democrats get a hearing.
A graduate of a divinity school?
Let's see Boehner argue with that.
Boehner cannot possibly be drunk as often as he looks it. But a clean-living graduate of a divinity school -- a preacher -- should appeal to a lot of Ohio conservatives.

(94,552 posts)Look, if you're in the District or can get there, volunteer all you want. But if you're proposing to send money, ask yourself: is there an equally good Democrat with a BETTER CHANCE OF WINNING in an other Republican seat? Boehner has been locked into an R+15 district; absent a criminal indictment, you won't beat him. You'll feel self-satisfied for "sticking it" to Boehner, and you'll make no difference at all. Your choice.

The reason I would support the courageous Democrats who run against the Boehners and Issas in our world is to educate those very conservative voters about who Democrats really are. The Republican Party faithful and some of the media paints us as extremists who are out to destroy their comfortable way of life. That is false. We all know that.
To run against Boehner is so difficult to do. You face a lot of hostility. Even being a Democratic voter in some very red areas is difficult. So we need to give extra support ot the brave people who do that. It isn't all about winning in the short run. It is also about building democracy and providing choices to all Americans. If just winning were the entire point, I would not be interested in politics. But it is also about increasing understanding and broadening the outlook of our country and fearful, conservative voters.
