House Dem TV Ad: Obamacare Ain't Perfect But I'm The Guy To Fix It

DYLAN SCOTT – FEBRUARY 12, 2014, 11:59 AM EST

Under assault by Republicans for Obamacare's unpopularity with the public, House Democrats are walking a fine line in their 2014 campaigns between taking credit for the law and distancing themselves from its problems.

A new ad on behalf of Rep. Joe Garcia (D-FL), whose race is rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report, epitomizes that balancing act.

It touts that Garcia is "working to fix Obamacare" and criticized the Obama administration for HealthCare.gov's disastrous rollout. But it also highlights a part of the law more popular with Americans: prohibiting insurance companies from discriminating against people with preexisting medical conditions.

National Journal reports that the ad, which has a $90,000 buy paid for by the Democratic-backing House Majority PAC, is a response to attack ads being run against Garcia by the conservative Americans for Prosperity.

This seems like a sensible position for a guy in a soft district. But I question whether he had to be even this negative about it. Surely he could have mentioned how many hundreds of thousands of Floridians are already better off because of the law. But with 30 seconds, you have to take your best shot.
