The Muslim Threat

By William Saletan

Yesterday I wrote about the danger of demonizing Muslims. I cited remarks from several Republican politicians who argued a couple of years ago that no mosque should be allowed near the site of the 9/11 attack in New York.

Today I looked at a speech given last night in California by Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La. Jindal’s speech, which asserted a religious right to practice anti-gay policies in private business activity, echoed the argument made 14 years ago by Bob Jones University in defense of its policy against interracial dating. The resemblance is uncanny. You can read the whole article here.

But Jindal’s speech raised another problematic theme as well: the idea of a war between Islam and Christianity. Here’s what he said:

In nation after nation, Christians are being slaughtered by radical Islamists for their beliefs. … Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote that “The cross is laid on every Christian. It begins with the call to abandon the attachments of this world. ... When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die.” And today, around the world, many Christians are living out that calling. That is a shooting war over religion, not a silent one.

Is there such a thing as an RC Dominionist? Seems conservative RCs would feel more at home belonging to Agnus Dei; they're as scarey as the Dominionists.

When Gov.-elect Bobby Jindal converted to Catholicism during high school and college, he took a momentous step away from his inherited faith of Hinduism, the prevalent religion of his parents' generation and Indian homeland.

Tradition, Family, and Property.

They're pretty wacky, to sum up their beliefs, they think that liberalism and egalitarianism are the "Revolution" (Evil) and they are the "Counter-Revolution" (Good). The Revolution, according to them, has undermined and destroyed the authority of the Church and Elites of society, and they think they should be restored with the poor people being put back in their place and told the best thing they should be able to do is rise to a position where they serve the Elites.

This is their Wikipedia article, but it's heavily sanitized.

You aren't them.

No, a false dichotomy won't help us either. Sufis are also under attack from Islamists, you should stand with them as well if you are REALLY concerned about religious freedom... unless your definition of religious freedom is just being a sociopath when it comes to gays and other religious beliefs.
