A message of warning to supporters of any candidate.
Lets just say I have lived long enough to see the unfurling of the republican media machine. As a Democrat, I am always amused at our nose in the air attitude about how we conquer new media and have expertise so far above the right.
In some aspect that is true.. we do seem to get our fingers on the pulse of changing media quicker. But we do not stick with it. The right are like cockroaches. They come in and you can't get rid of them..you open the door of your shiny new stainless steel refrigerator..and there they are already scurrying to avoid the light.
A little history.. the fairness doctrine (you had to give equal access to both sides of an issue by media) was initially supported by the republicans in 1949. But a whole new brand of corporate republicans got into a power base in the late 70's.. They got rid of the fairness doctrine.. and that is where right wing AM started to throw down its roots.. Let them have AM radio our side said.. We are more cultured..we listen to FM. Like cockroaches.. the creep was in.
And every time the roaches, take over a new area.. some (let me reiterate that .. some) run. There is no stand and fight, and clean the mess up. Look at poor little old Air America.. we just can't be bothered with standing in there. (just an example.. we are not so supportive of left wing talk media) So off to a new venue.
The Koch's who everyone seems to know now, and their ilk.. went into buying up books.. pushing anything center or left off the charts.. Look at the best sellers list.. see what is on there..
Screw public radio and public TV.. not going to support those people anymore either.. (Yep the Koch's are supporting certain programs on TV.. the roaches are marching)
Sure we took to cyber space..and they are right behind us. House of Cards mentality, as posters are led on right wing sites to attack any positive story about the Democrats or the left.. screw AOL.. screw Yahoo.. off to the gallows with Face book.
I have been quite ill the last few months..and given to a lot of time and retrospective. The patterns repeat and repeat.
So all of this is just a word of warning to everyone, who backs anyone. When the cockroaches start scurrying and chewing on everything around you.. get the bug spray out and start cleaning house.
