Cuomo in 2016? I've never been a Cuomo fan, but after hearing this I'm

ready to take another look:

N.Y. Becomes Largest Prison System To Curb Solitary Confinement

"In fact, Cuomo has also been pushing an aggressive prison reform agenda, including a call for more education and inmate re-entry programs."

http://www.npr.org/2014/02/23/281373188/n-y-becomes-largest-prison-system-to-curb-solitary-confinement

Cuomo has closed 13 prisons in NYS.

2. That's great, but I'd like to see him make moves to clean up the Port Authority.

Hell, I'd like him to just SAY something about it, such as condemning Christie's call to him to complain about Pat Foye blowing the whistle on Bridgegate. Cuomo's silence has been deafening.

The NY/NJ Port Authority's 2014 budget provides for $8.2 BILLION in total spending.

The Port Authority sure looks like a huge slush fund. I can't help but think that the reason Cuomo is not issuing outraged press releases on the subject is that he has dirty hands with regard to the Port Authority.

6. solitary confinement is torture.Wish the State & Federal gov would require FOI requests of prisons.

currently Freedom of Info requests can't be made of 'for profit' private prisons. Their internal records are a secret.
Even the state/federal prisons don't seem to have public records of how often (and for what reasons) they use solitary confinement. And if solitary confinement means no books, no music, no radio, nothing except years in a box.

The info. only info come from past prisoners who talk about mental damages from their solitary confinement torture.

We Americans have a right to observe our Gov. at work. This includes our prison system, IMO.

7. Most of the prisoners shouldn't be there in the first place

Giving these people a felony and then an education isn't really the most effective way to solve the problem.

Still better than what the Republicans put forward though.

It's about time we free non-violent drug offenders and aggressively work to jail our government war criminals and Wall Street's financial criminals.

13. The inmates in "solitary" --

It's actually called a Special Housing Unit -- are there because they've committed serious prison rule violations, liking fighting, possession of weapons, engaging in gang activity, assaulting staff, etc.

The simple fact is that many of these inmates pose a danger to other inmates and security staff if not segregated from the general population.

What do you do with these inmates? There is no easy answer.

Cool-hand Luke is fiction.

15. I'd have to see the Special Housing Unit in New York to make a proper judgement - however -

New Amnesty International Report Exposes Severe, Inhumane Solitary Confinement Conditions for 3,000 California Prisoners

Human Rights Group Urges California to Amend Brutal Conditions

(New York) – Three thousand prisoners in two California prisons are being held in solitary confinement under “cruel, degrading and inhuman” conditions that violate international standards, Amnesty International said today based on exclusive access to Pelican Bay and Corcoran state prisons. In a new report, the human rights organization said California is holding prisoners in extreme isolation – with no fresh air, natural light, direct human contact or programs – for years and even decades, and leaving them with little hope of ever emerging from the confinement.

He is not on our side.
