RNC Chair Reince Priebus Proclaims A Republican Tsunami Will Sweep Washington In 2014

Eleanor Clift

At a breakfast with reporters on Tuesday, RNC Chair Reince Priebus exuded confidence about his party’s chances in 2014.

What a difference a year makes, or even six months when it comes to assessing the electoral strength of the Republican Party. “If you look at which party is riding high and which party is in the dumps, the Democrats are in the dumps,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told a group of reporters on the one-year anniversary of his “Growth and Opportunity” roadmap urging the GOP to “embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform,” a re-branding exercise that his party promptly rejected.

“Is anyone writing stories that say it’s not looking like a disaster for Democrats?” Priebus challenged the reporters, answering his question “It’s a disaster for Democrats.” It’s so bad for Democrats heading into the 2014 midterms that the RNC raised almost 20 million more than the DNC last year, Priebus said. “I don’t think in recorded history the party out of power outraised the party in power so soon after the election.”

The re-positioning on issues that Priebus favored has fallen by the wayside, a casualty of the internal wars within the party. Instead, Priebus has shifted instead to the more technocratic side of politics, putting in place year-round ground operations in battleground states, making investments in technology, and re-doing his party’s primary calendar to head off a repeat of the 23 debates that turned the 2012 Republican primary contest into a clown show.

“We’ve fundamentally reshaped the way we do business at the RNC,” he told reporters over breakfast in Washington sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor. While Mitt Romney’s loss to President Obama in 2012 was seen by some in the party as a mismatch on issues, others in the GOP attributed the loss of a race Romney should have won given the state of the economy to the GOP’s failure to keep up with the Obama campaign’s efforts to identify and turnout potential voters.

If they keep pulling shit like they just did with that Rape Insurance law in my state of Michigan, we women will make sure those baggers never knew what hit them in November. Wendy Davis is within striking distance in Texas, Rick "The Dictator" Snyder is in trouble here in Michigan, Yertle the Turtle is in a little bit of hot water, the list goes on--even with serious gerrymandering. We woman are FURIOUS and we aren't going to keep fighting the same goddamn war we fought 40 years ago.

Is this the same "tsunami" that was supposed to happen in 2012? More like ripples in the kiddie pool.

I just can't get my head around this. Everything the Repub Party stands for is contrary to most public opinion - other than the rich 1%, the banksters and Fox News junkies. Most Repubs I talk to are embarrassed to call themselves Repubs. Many won't admit it openly but they are either not going to vote; vote their conscience or vote independent (in Repub speak - it means voting for some Dems).

I know the Party can raise a lot of money and buy elections - but will that do it for them?

My gut tells me that the rank and file American People are fed up with the Repub Party and the stonewalling and lack of doing anything that can move this country forward.

Is Priebus just throwing this out their to deflect the real problem that the Party faces? Is this wishful thinking on his part?

Between now and the November elections - all prominent Dems - all over the country - including the President - have to get very vocal and every chance they get - they need to remind the American People of the Repubs antics and lack of action - and stress how important this election is coming up. They need to really motivate people to Get Out To Vote.

I know it has almost become cliche that - this next election is the most important election we've ever face - but I really believe it this time. We need to maintain the Senate and win the House in order to let President Obama achieve the greatness that we all know that he is capable of. We need to give him the ammunition to complete all those promises that he made - that he now can't achieve - because of this destructive force we have in this country - called the Repub Party.

All of us need to talk it up too. We need to motivate all we come in contact with to GOTV. We need to educate our younger generations and get them motivated to take an interest. They are the ones that will feel the brunt of the destruction that the Repub Party will do - long into the future - if we let the Repub Party take over.

Sure, the corporate news media loves a dramatic horse race election story ... but ...

It does seem to me that the Repuglicans right now have captured the momentum and inevitability meme.

Is it because the Koch money is having its intended effect in rising Repuglican chances?

On the Bill Press Show this morning, the Cook Political Report person said Alaska, Louisiana and North Carolina Senate races have all been moved from 'lean Democrat' to 'tossup'.

Where is the central Democratic Party theme for 2014 that we need to reject extremism and elect reasonable, but principled Democrats?

Why is Pres. Obama dithering on the XL pipeline and leaving Democratic candidates hanging out there on this issue -- I think it will hurt Democrats if he approves it -- but he needs to decide now and get it behind.

Unless the Democratic Party has some kind of stealth GOTV strategy that will ensure the liberal/progressive base votes heavily in the fall, well, at this point (and I stress at this point) Prebius is doing what a part chair should be doing.

RNC chairman: Romney would win if election were today
Monday Sep 3, 2012 11:48 AM
By NBC's Jamie Novogrod

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mitt Romney would be elected president if the election were held today, the Republican National Committee's chairman boldly predicted Monday.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus predicted a Romney victory based on projected wins in several swing states (polls of which are less definitively optimistic for Romney).

"I feel real good that if the election was held today, we’d be winning today. If the election is tied, we’re going to win the election," Priebus said during a press conference today kicking off the GOP’s "rapid response" effort during the Democratic National Convention.

The house is out of our reach and they may even increase their advantage by picking up some seats. It's the Senate that has me really worried. These nut jobs that have been elected in the last few years are not mainstream Republicans, they are extreme RW kooks like Cruz, Gohmert, Paul, etc.

No one can govern with these people, they don't know the art of negotiation and compromise. If they manage to win the Senate, forget about the rest of Obama's agenda. It will also have a big impact in 2016, even if we manage to win the WH.

But if we don't GOTV, he'll be more right than wrong. We don't win elections just by being on the right side of issues. Just ask Al Gore. Hell, just ask Alex Sink.

Then we have the Presidential elections, Dem turnout goes up, and again we have the advantage.

You know... this may be the perfect opportunity to promote the most radical candidates in the mid-terms.

Worst case scenario is that we lose the Senate, and nothing happens for 2 years.

right after the 2012 elections, that the RNC needs to reshape the GOP. You know, reach out to more women, and minorities, and change their opinions on these groups. They have done absolutely nothing to remedy this, or their fall in 2012. In fact, in some cases, they have made it worse. Paul Ryan proved it the other day. The racism on the right is just as strong as ever. So, Mr. Penis is just talking smack about how they will win. He is sooooo full of shit!!! If we can convince more to get out and vote this time around, it will be a landslide for the left.
