2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'm standing by my President
For all the things he could have done or said differently or better, all the coulda-shoulda-wouldas...if you look (at least at this moment in time) at how they are playing out, I contend he is managing to keep a lid on outcomes that were likely under a lesser President (granting the dynamism of all these scenarios):
1) Ukraine - still a lid on the ultimate violence ... sanctions freezing out Russia with Europe on board
2) Gaza / Israel conflict - at least sporadic timeouts
3) Ferguson - turnaround in 24 hours.
He is being hit with unprecedented instability this summer, and though it's been a gauntlet of fire, whatever part he has played is, at least for the time being, leading to calm and resolution. AT LEAST FOR THE TME BEING!

(46,416 posts)he runs his administration that way. I take comfort in that.

(14,564 posts)I have seen that in him all along.
I like his process a lot, I am sort of like him.
Measured, don't let emotion get in the way, just let the facts come to you, hear what people have to say and make the right decision.

(45,358 posts)I have so much respect for him.
Lots of DU'ers are going to be shocked when he's gone. They don't know how good we've got it.

(9,688 posts)He plays a long game, as a President should. The news has been downright frightening of late: but it's so reassuring to know that we have a man like Obama in the White House.

(16,984 posts)When I think about some of the things that drove other presidents in my lifetime, I also think Obama the best-adjusted overall.

(53,661 posts)In a recent article , Rick Perlstein (author of new book on the rise of Reagan) was cited as saying that Reagan infantilized American politics. I agree with that assessment.. and we (the voters) seem to be getting more childish with every passing year.

They sure didn't do anything to offset chimpy's negative example, though.

What a pleasant surprise!
When I saw him make his statement yesterday about Ferguson, I was lukewarm on it. Wanted more passion. But when the turnaround happened in Ferguson last night, I can only attribute it in part to his leadership.
With people like John McCain and Lindsay Graham running off half-cocked all the time, trying to instigate and bait him, there he stands, firm hand on the rudder, unprovoked and sticking to his principles. Cheney and others try to paint him as ineffectual and a wimp in foreign policy. I don't see it that way. I see that he is a man of peace, 1st, but will strike where necessary - namely where humanitarian needs, or real threats of violence on American, are at risk.
He is one of my role models in life.

(35,015 posts)Sure I don't agree with everything, and I don't expect him to be omnipotent, as some do. He is smart, and even though he has gobs of people who have hatefully vowed to stop him, he still finds cracks and crevices where he can make difference.

(22,896 posts)No president can please everyone (as Lincoln so wisely observed), but I think
President Obama has done one helluva job!!

(66,328 posts)But that's from shit-talkers talking out their asses.
Is he supposed to don sackcloth and ashes after every social upheaval?
There was a leader who literally did the sackcloth and ashes bit after ordering an atrocity, or turning a blind eye to the atrocities of others. He really laid it on; self-flagellation, fasting, praying for weeks at a time. The leader was Ivan the Terrible, and it didn't work out very well for the people he ruled.
Let's have a measured, reasoned, level-headed leader who makes the right decision at the right time. That leader is Barack Obama.
Perfect? No. Light-years better than any schlub the republicans could forward? Hell-to-the-yeah!

(24,728 posts)- he doesn't overreact.
Iraq? I'm not sure where it's going yet and I sure as hell would not be happy with boots on the ground. I disagree with that policy. But I'm willing to see what his plan is, and generally have confidence he will make a principled decision.

With President Obama He appears cool & reflective on the outside but just as the events surrounding the assassination of Bin Laden demonstrate we don't know what's really going down.
