Liberia, the United States, and Ebola

Beginning in 1820, thousands of freed African-American slaves colonized a patch of western Africa with the help of prominent American abolitionists. They named that nation ”Liberia,” modeling their flag and political institutions after the United States.


English is the official language of Liberia for this very reason.

and we often get Liberian patients. I know their official language is English, but they have an distinctive accent. Anyway, so many times we will go into giggling hysterical fits because someone (usually a sweet young thing) will ask for a "Liberian Translator".
Once a MD asked for a "Swahili translator" and we were rolling on the floor.
