2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWendy Davis would have won if the Supreme Court had not stepped in to save the GOP
In a rare weekend announcement, a majority of the high courts justices protected the GOP and rejected an emergency request from the Justice Department and civil rights groups to prohibit Texas from requiring voters to produce certain forms of photo ID to cast ballots. Three justices dissented.
The law was struck down by a federal judge last week, but a federal appeals court had put that ruling on hold.
The judge found that roughly 600,000 voters, many of them black or Latino, could be turned away at the polls because they lack acceptable identification. Early voting in Texas begins Monday.
Wendy Davis would have most likely won if all the voters were allowed to vote.

(6,665 posts)its not over yet, and Wendy still has plenty of time to get her message out to undecided voters.

(9,951 posts)I really, really would like to see her pull off an upset, but I don't think it's going to happen, especially now that the SCOTUS has upheld TX's voting ID law.

(16,916 posts)every poll shows her seriously down, and always outside of the MOE. If you have evidence that the polls are wrong, share it. Everyone here will be happy to hear it!
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)but I'm a realist, and being a realist tells me that she has next to zero chance of pulling off an upset.
Every poll out there shows her behind by 9 points, and this close to the elections, unless Abbott makes a major gaffe, he's going to win.

The only people who thought Cantor had it in the bag on the eve of primary day were Eric Cantor and his campaign.

(3,544 posts)You know, the channel that is fair and balanced. Yeah right!!! They were shocked after the election. I'd love to see it again. And yes, this was the exception, not the norm. However, it leaves hope for others in the same situation. Hell, I remember Rove thinking Rmoney wasn't out it after EVERYONE knew he was toast. But then, Rove is a total imbecile.

(4,695 posts)decisions of judges based on removing a citizen's right to vote.
This opportunity could pull out many voters that usually stay at home. We still have early voting (go by after work) for 10 days. Rick Perry narrowly won four years ago. Texans are tired of ReThug policies, especially that the Tea Party Extremism is taking hold of Texas. They have cut public school funding by $6 Billion, with more cuts to come. The Extremist controlled Legislature is to meet again this Jan 2015 - May.

(9,951 posts)Not good, it seems that her campaign ad featuring the wheelchair backfired on her, after the ad was aired, her numbers dipped to 32%.
Major gaffe, I understand what the message she was trying to get across was, but she should have left the wheelchair out.
Iamthetruth
(487 posts)She had an incredible uphill fight to begin with.
and it seemed for a while there that she might pull it off and defeat Abbott.
That's ok, TX is slowly trending blue, it's only a matter of time. Tick Tock.

(16,916 posts)But she was never, ever about to "pull it off and defeat Abbott."
That could change--anything is possible, especially when we vote--but let us not kid ourselves.

You can't put on the radio in the car without hearing a news story about the subpoenas or an ad about them.

As unpleasant as it may be, lacking a realistic view is dangerous in politics.

(11 posts)How is this possible?
after 8 years destroying the country and 6 years sabotaging America from congress still republicans ,with that record, will take the senate ?
very simple! REPUBLICANS criminal minds go and LIE and LIE once, twice and a thousand times on everybody's face every second, every minute and so on... WHILE democrats do almost nothing to stop them.
GET UP Democrats!!! let's use all the media available, minute after minute , EVERYBODY need TO SCRUB on all the American people's face THE CRIMINAL REPUBLICAN RECORD.

(4,058 posts)She was endorsed by all the major newspapers and remember Voter ID have been in effect for some time so those who want to vote will likely get to vote. It just means it takes more effort than the constitution requires. I wish your title was Wendy Davis path to winning would be easier sans SCOTUS ruling.

It doesn't help to play fast and loose with the facts.
And I say that as someone who has donated money to Davis and would like to see a miracle.
