I have no idea what is going on in the heart of the state..but it looks like heavy turnout in the quad cities,, which I am hoping translates across the state..

That would be so wonderful..
I am on the western border..and it looks like turnout is heavy in South Sioux City NE.. Sioux City sits on three states...

(20,450 posts)Iowa is the state that showed the rest of the country, and frankly the rest of the world, that we can overcome race and skin color. It is the state that demonstrated that it could elect Barack Obama in the primaries and then choose him again in the general election.
Iowa is the state that, once again, can prove that we can defy the odds and overcome anything if we just fight. This small state--a farm state--is not only beautiful, it is the birthplace of true, grassroots populism!
I hope voters don't prove us wrong tonight. I hope they show us who they really are. They're not for these Teabagging, America-hating, secessionists-seeking bigots. That's not who Iowans are and that's not who Americans are!

(20,450 posts)I will be heartbroken if we give away Harkin's 35-year seat to a fucking Teabagger. Nothing will hurt me more tonight than that. Everywhere else, it is expected, but Harkin is a legacy. Quite frankly, he was the last remaining liberal Democrats representing a Midwestern swing state.
What happened to Iowa, anyway? I remember the state being pretty progressive. Independent but rarely Republican.

(22,875 posts)and has been for years.. And we have been hammered by big corporate money this cycle... I can't tell you how it is in the eastern part of the state.. that is where our liberal base is.. truly.. but out here on the western side, the commericals have been running 5 to 1 for Ernst.. it is really red .. This is the Steve King district.. part of the problem is voting back the familiar.. the tea party and uber right slipped under the radar a number of years ago.. got themselves pretty entrenched..and people just keep pulling the lever for the familiar name..
People in Iowa, old white people .. loved the President, because he is familiar to us in the way he talks.. very midwestern.. people felt very comfortable with the President.. And this election our turnout has been better than I thought it would be on the western side.. and reading that the Quad Cities was turning out so heavy early this morning.. gives me hope..

(20,450 posts)in recent years, but that certainly wasn't always the case. Democrats could rely on the state with certainty back in the day. I'm just racking my brain, trying to figure out how it went so far towards the other side.
And Steve King? Please don't get me started on that nutcase.

(22,875 posts)and this is a big one.. he actually agreed to a debate this time.. he was feeling the heat.. so I have hopes that the next cycle he will either see the writing on the wall and retire.. or he is voted out of there in 2016..
