Fox Noise: 37% of Voters Believe Gays Should Be Able To Get Married

It took them no time to put out a poll in reaction to the President's endorsement.

Here's the question, I saw the poll that said that 50% of Americans support gay marriage, while 47% don't. We figured that the Obama team saw the numbers, and saw that it wouldn't hurt them politically. I'm gay, so I'm dumbfounded by Fox's results. I thought it was a viewers poll, but apparently it's not. Is the key word here "voters", not the country at large?

According to a Fox News poll released Wednesday, 37 percent of voters believe gays and lesbians should be allowed to get married legally. While that’s unchanged from 2010, when the question was most recently asked, it’s nearly double the 20 percent who felt that way in March 2004, the first time it was asked.

On the other hand, the poll finds 25 percent think there should be no legal recognition given to gay and lesbian relationships, down from 28 percent in 2010 and a high of 40 percent in 2004.

The remaining one third (33 percent) think same-sex couples should be allowed a legal partnership similar to but not called marriage. While that number has bounced around a bit over the years, 33 percent also favored this middle-ground position in 2004.

I believe this is pretty accurate. David__77 May 2012 #2
You get a lower number when you disambiguate the civil union/marriage question bluestateguy May 2012 #3

Another factoid from their poll.

There is probably a large segment of people who think they are enlightened, and who may be "ok" with marriage equality, but would rather there be some other option.

When you present an either/or choice b/w marriage and civil unions then you will get a lower number for the marriage option.

You will get a higher number for marriage when you simply ask yes or no about gay marriage.

Gay marriage vs. civil uinions is not a "splitting hairs" type question. If you're for civil unions rather than gay marriage, the response to the gay marriage question would have to be a "no" from those who were polled.
