Primaries serve a vital function, beyond merely picking the nominee.

Primaries force candidates to put their political cards on the table, so to speak. As members of a party that chooses its candidate through popular acclaim, we have the right to hear what those who would be our nominee have to say for themselves, as well as how they react in debates with others seeking the nomination. It shows who stands where, although it also gives the media to pick and choose incidents that have nothing to do with a candidate's true appeal. Just ask Howard Dean.

On the other hand, the system works wonders to expose shams. Just ask Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, and just about every other candidate for the Republican nomination in 2012. It's no fun when you realize your party is asking you to choose the candidate that sounds least like a moron. We will not be in that position in 2016. Whether or not you like HRC, Warren, Sanders, O'Malley or anyone else, they ALL have the candlepower. Any one of them has more upstairs than the 2012 batch of Republican hopefuls combined (not that being of average intelligence is a barrier to the presidency--remember a guy named "Dumya?&quot .

2. Has anyone considered Sherrod Brown?

I am always impressed with him and his views when I see him interviewed, but that is all I ever see or hear about him. I am wondering what people more familiar with him think. I see him as being right there along with Bernie, EW, and Al Franken, as being the most progressive people in government right now.

4. I had an OP on possible EW vps and talked about Brown.

He would be dynamite on a ticket with EW, IMO. He is very attractive, smart and knows his stuff. They could be unbeatable. A firebrand progressive woman and a liberal guy who is strong for women. They would leave Jeb behind easily.

Closest person to Brown politically (IMHO) who is really interested in running is former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley, a social and economic liberal and a lifelong Democrat.

He's only 3 years older than Sanders. Plus there will likely be someone that nobody is even thinking about now (like Mike Gravel in 2008).
