(44,576 posts)1. Maybe this is his way of trying to appeal to the left
Christie nominated Phil Kwon...(who) would be the first Asian-American to sit on the state Supreme Court...and Bruce Harris...an openly gay African-American Republican mayor...
Or maybe not:
Christie has emphasized that he wants to remake the Supreme Court, which he blames for tying his hands on such issues as financing poor school districts and affordable housing. For instance, last May the Supreme Court voted 3-2 to force the state to pay $500 million more than was budgeted for the states poorest school districts...The decisions established that state financing for inner-city districts must be equal to the wealthiest schools.

Christie Defends Muslim Pick for New Jersey Judge, Calls Critics Crazies
I think this kind of thing would make him more likely as a VP pick - you announce that after the nomination is sewn up, and when you want to tack to the centre. McCain sank himself by nominating an extremist for VP, turning off independent voters.

2012 approach was completely dysfunctional and they're trying to look more moderate.
