Twenty-five years ago, Maureen McDonnell wrote to an NFL quarterback who had been her sister-in-laws college boyfriend and asked him for money, according to Bob McDonnells youngest sister.
Virginias future first lady, Maureen P. McDonnell, urged the quarterback not to tell Bob about the request, according to a letter that Maureen Carney McDonnell, Bob McDonnells sister, wrote to U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer.
The judge will sentence the former governor Tuesday.
Bob McDonnell was convicted in September on 11 corruption counts. The former governors sister asks the judge to spare him from incarceration and instead to let him serve others who are in need.
Defense lawyers have submitted more than 400 letters to the judge from officeholders and Bob McDonnells family members, former aides, friends and former constituents urging a lenient punishment.
