Martin O’Malley To Test Granite State Waters

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is emerging as the first major potential Democratic presidential primary threat to Hillary Clinton, as he hits New Hampshire today for a two-day swing to raise
money for the local party and meet with Granite State activists.
“There’s room for a Hillary Clinton alternative,” said Democratic strategist Scott Ferson. “He’s not Scott Walker to Jeb Bush, but if it turns out that
every other word in her private email is ‘Benghazi,’ there’s an opportunity for someone else.”
O’Malley will speak at a bookstore in Concord tonight during a fundraiser for Merrimack County and Concord City Democrats. Then, he’s expected to meet with local party activists in Manchester. Tomorrow morning, he’ll attend a fundraiser for the New Hampshire Democratic Party at the home of Executive Councilor Chris Pappas in Manchester.
His trip comes at the end of a rough week for Clinton, still reeling from scandals over her use of private email for State Department business and foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation.
“Bill Clinton came out of
nowhere in 1992,” Ferson said. “All the heavy hitters — Ted Kennedy, Mario Cuomo — decided not to run. Stranger things have happened, but a lot of things will have to happen.”
