By Steve Benen
Congressional Republicans are still quite outraged by President Obamas recess appointments last week, and plan to take up a resolution criticizing the move just as soon as they return from recess.
Its astounding to me that the president is claiming these are recess appointments and within his authority, when Congress was not in fact in recess, Black said. These appointments are an affront to the Constitution. No matter how you look at this, it doesnt pass the smell test. I hope the House considers my resolution as soon as we return to Washington so we can send a message to President Obama. (emphasis added)
Jonathan Bernstein called this the best self-refuting argument ever, adding, (W)ere to believe that its outrageous for the president to call whats happening now a recess, and the House intends to take it up as soon as they get back into town after recessing for the holiday.
Exactly. The president decided lawmakers had left town for a congressional recess. Lawmakers effectively endorsed the line when they said the White House couldnt submit a request for a debt-ceiling increase while they were on a congressional recess.
<...>
Id encourage Republicans to think this one through a little more, but Im not sure theyd understand the problem even if they pondered the contradiction.

Republicans are anti-American people. They live to make our existence pitiful while they live in lux.

WE ONLY PROTECT THE 1% is their message.

(3,163 posts)...you picked a bad example. During 2010, the second full year of Obamas first term, the release of toxic chemicals into the environment rose by 16% nationwide. The following years budget for the EPA was cut from $10.3 billion to $8.3 billion. Obamas role in that cut is unclear, but he certainly did not lead any public resistance to the reduction, nor is he including environmental issues in his campaign rhetoric today.

I'm guessing that skipping out on work, while earning way more money than any of the Grand Old (ripoff)Party assholes are worth, is gonna get more airplay than anyhting the GOP whines about.

(398 posts)I've never seen a group or individual that can contradict itself so thoroughly and completely. I thought, hey, GWBush had hundreds of recess appointments, hundreds of signing statements, 1/3 of his time in office gone for vacation. But when Obama does a couple of recess appointments, a couple of signing statements and an occasional vacation, the GOP goes nuts and exaggerates on the move.
But this one really takes the cake because they're contradicting themselves within their own statement. They are really saying, "No, you're not allowed to make a recess appointment during our recess."
