O’Malley Campaign Rips Hillary Clinton on Unaccompanied Minors.

Martin O’Malley for President Spokeswoman Gabriela Domenzain comments in e-mailed statement on Secretary Hillary Clinton’s contention that children fleeing violence in Central America should have been sent back.

“When thousands of children fleeing death and drug gangs in Central America sought refuge at the U.S. border, her first instinct was to send them home. Then, facing pressure for taking a position that would essentially ensure sending children back to certain death, she backtracked. Now today, she is standing by her initial comments that the children should have been sent back immediately”

“Governor O’Malley has been crystal clear on this issue from day one. He broke with both Republicans and Democrats and said we needed to be guided by our better angels and welcome the children as refugees”

Martin O’Malley and Hillary Clinton disagreed last year on what to do about the Central American children who illegally crossed the border. But O’Malley went too far in claiming that Clinton wanted to “return refugee children from Central America summarily back to death gangs and the drug gangs.”

Clinton drew a distinction last year between migrants who crossed the border illegally for economic or family reasons and refugees whose lives would be in danger if they were deported. She favored returning migrant children to “responsible adults in their families” back in Central America. But she also said that she would not deport children who had “a legitimate claim for asylum” and “would face some terrible danger if they return.”

O’Malley, who served as mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland, is one of a few Democrats preparing to challenge Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination. It has been clear for many months that O’Malley likely would run against Clinton and he gained some press coverage last summer when, on July 11, 2014, he “went to the left of Hillary Clinton on the border crisis,” as Real Clear Politics put it.

In the summer of 2014, there was a sharp increase in the number of unaccompanied immigrant children from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras who illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. On June 30, 2014, President Obama sought money from Congress to, among other things, expedite the deportation of the unaccompanied minors – which drew criticism from groups that support civil rights and less restrictive immigration policies.

3. Martin O'Malley Criticizes 'Detention Camps' For Immigrant Families.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley criticized the Obama administration -- albeit not by name -- on Friday for continuing to detain undocumented women and children.

"We should not be in the business of building barbed wire detention camps. Detentions are cruel, costly & against our values-esp for families," O'Malley, who is weighing a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, tweeted.

O'Malley also tweeted the link to a New York Times editorial published Friday calling for an end to the "immoral" practice of detaining families in deportation proceedings. "Let's lead with our principles & end them," he added in a second tweet.

I actually am a full amnesty supporter--the way we approach immigration is a very broken system. It needs to be front and center in this campaign

O’Malley , Obama aides spar over unaccompanied immigrant children.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a stalwart ally of President Obama, has landed in an escalating fight with the White House over what to do about thousands of unaccompanied children streaming across the U.S. border.

It started Friday, when O’Malley declared that returning the children to their home countries, as Obama has suggested, would send them “back to certain death.” That prompted an angry response from White House officials and accusations of hypocrisy when O’Malley opposed locating a shelter for the children in a Maryland county.

But the Democratic governor, who is considering a bid for president in 2016, did not budge from his position in interviews Wednesday.

“We are Americans, and we do not return refugee kids who find themselves on our doorstep back into war-torn or famine-racked places where they will face certain death,” O’Malley said. “I think we have to act like Americans.”

I'm no Hillary fan but that ad is ridiculous. I hope Latinos see it for the complete and utter bullshit it is... Republicans criticizing Hillary for having (much) milder versions of the same policies that they vehemently push... hipocrisia indeed!

Not one to hide inhumanity behind obscure semantics.

A man who cares. A damn good record. Not, as far as I can see, in anyone's pocket.

This is an important distinction between Hillary and O'Malley. While Hillary is frantically moving left to appear less extreme on immigration/refugee issues, she is still far to the right of O'Malley.

And her supporting sending those children back to likely death or hard lives is truly shameful. Even worse when you consider her State Dept's role in the coup in Honduras where many of those children were fleeing from.
