Cornel West: Join Brother Bernie on the Love Train!

For those of you who were worried, you shouldn't have been. West was fiery, but didn't go off on a tangent. In fact, this introduction gave me chill bumps. The crowd seemed to eat it up, too.

Edited to add correct URL.

Another edit to add Bernie's speech:

Both West and Sanders were warmly received by the crowd, which included a mix of Benedict students and Democrats from the surrounding area.

Tevin Spruill and Christopher Lewis, two students, said they had not heard much about Sanders prior to his appearance Saturday but were leaving the gymnasium prepared to support him.

“Every single thing he said made complete sense,” said Lewis, 20, a junior majoring in social work.

Spruill said he wasn’t particularly concerned about West’s criticism of Obama, suggesting it was different to criticize a sitting president than someone still aspiring to the job. As for Obama, “he hasn’t done a perfect job, but he’s been a good president,” said Spruill, 21, who is a music major.

Sep 2015

Literalists never understand metaphoric language. West must have been hanging out with too many academics and forgot to speak more simply and less colorfully for certain elements of the American public.

But what he was saying, Spitfire, is that he thought Obama's policies were destructive to the environment in the same way that Zimmerman was destructive to Treyvon Martin. The similarities might lie in Obama's power and the environment's "unarmed" quality, i.e., it just sits there and gets done to -- and, ultimately, destroyed.

West wanted Obama to be more environmentally conscious as well as more protective of AAs against White Supremacists (in another metaphoric statement that scandalized the literal). Do you understand that? West was defending what is good against what he saw as Obama's capitulation to that which is bad. West champions AAs and the environment. Would you fault him for that? I doubt it. What you fault him for is expressing his concerns in metaphoric language with shocking, offensive (to some) terms.

BTW, I like Obama and just yesterday got reamed by a DUer for defending him.

And as often as not — and this is an interesting point that is the honest-to-God truth — what people will say is, ‘I don’t really know what socialism is, but if you’re not a Democrat or a Republican, you’re OK with me.’ That’s true. And I think there has been too much of a reluctance on the part of progressives and radicals to use the word ‘socialism.’”

Unless you say he has 'evolved' into a democratic socialist.....

I think Bernie's own words are quite clear.

As for Kim Davis, why are you even using her in the same sentence as Sanders....???

Sanders is a good man and a socialist...Davis is pond scum and a Democrat IN NAME ONLY!

Particularly the Scandinavian countries? That's the kind of "socialism" Bernie Sanders is talking about. That's also the same kind of "socialism" that FDR began to institute with Social Security and unemployment insurance. And of course, he was called a "socialist" by his political enemies (whom you would have loved).

If your mind could recognize anything beyond surface labels, you might be able to grasp that the concept (can you handle concepts?) of using government to secure the rights of ALL Americans was essential to the philosophy of our nation's founders. It is fundamentally American. It is also, in rightwing thought, highly, highly "socialistic." "Socialism," for rightwingers -- and apparently for you -- is a dirty word. Get over that.

I've seen of any reporting on Bernie's Southern Swing...anywhere.

Who knows how long this good reporting will last on MSM "WaPo" website....but, we should enjoy it for now and give the reporters who went to cover Bernie some hits...before they lose their jobs!

For now...I think this is the best reporting of Bernie's Campaign that I've seen, anywhere. Which leads me to believe there might be a reason for that. They don't assign reporters to "lesser Dem Candidates" unless something is brewing "under the scenery."

Anyway, whether this lasts with good reporting or not, I will enjoy the whole read while it lasts.

However we must stay vigilant in regards to the corporate media, they love nothing more than to set a frame in the hopes that it will jell and compartmentalize a candidate in which many of them are at odds with.

The corporate media loves "Citizens United" as it butters their bread with more mega-bucks, so to buck that self-serving dynamic takes a great deal of discipline and integrity on their part, I fervently hope they prove up to the task.

The "Washington Post" (WaPo) doing this incredible Coverage of Bernie's Second Swing Through SC, NC, VA and the Coverage in Video Snips (really capturing Bernies Message) and Commentary that is the most Thoughtful about Bernies Campaign I've see to Date!

to "WaPO" for this coverage and the Important Snips from his Southern Swing Speeches including the Black College Audiences and others.

I spent Over an Hour just READING the WaPo Coverage and was shocked that a "MSM Corporate Owned and Loving Website like WaPo" would do the great job their reporters did (so far) on "Bernie's Second Southern Swing!

The article and the Media Snips are Incredibly Good and Worth the Watch (even if a brief commercial interferes for a bit) .......I've not seen coverage like this on Sanders from any MSM so far.

WaPo sent a Reporter and Photographer on Bernie's "Southern Swing 2" which no Other MSM that I know of has done So Far.

Truly a Great DU Post and a MEDIA BREAK THROUGH for BERNIE!

Here's the WaPo Link that will take awhile to get through but for "BERNIE" supporters its well worth it. Links and Snips that we Bernie Supporters and All Dems should Watch.

GREAT JOB "WaPO!".........BUT.......Will it LAST?

West can't stand President Obama. He's also called him a "black mascot" and a "black puppet." He used to support Obama but turned on him when he didn't get a special invitation to the inauguration.

And I think he's jealous that Obama succeeded in a way he never could.

Sun Sep 13, 2015, 10:36 AM

… Dr. Cornel West is "just jealous"?????

Yeah, you're right… I missed seeing this response before asking for an example of how it the "n" word was applied to Barack Obama by Cornel West. So, thank you for pointing me to this clip.

Having seen West's response to what Obama had become on behalf of standing up to white supremacists in this nation, I understand the crudeness his term, "ni******tion" (which is guess has become a term synonymous with Uncle Tom's Cabin characterizations".)

I can understand two things - 1) the anger with having this pejorative flung at Obama, it's because there are many (both back and white Americans) who are angry that Obama did not stand up more on behalf of black Americans. and 2) the need to do what is right after promising to do what is right.

Is this real display of West's no different than the Black Lives Matters activists who publicly "in your face" voiced over the Sanders movement that HE had not addressed the BLM imperatives enough?… not stood UP enough on behalf of those Americans?… not took a more firm approach against the powers that be?

How does THAT suddenly become a racist comment when all you have to do is watch West's explanation and admitted angst a la, "in your face description"? West thought Obama should have made good on things that still have not been address in that strong language is more of a racist comment, now? He's jealous? I think you're smarter than that. Did YOU hear what he said? Can YOU see what the subject is?

Is there some "do not speak" rule when faced with expressing extreme frustration about those promises Obama turned away from? Or, is there a veil of "don't go there".

Drill down to the issues, and I'll tell you what - No one has an easy job of addressing them, and the fact that Bernie Sander's movement has fused a commitment from those who yearn for the same goal… which is Dr. West's goal… These are real goals to work passionately and focus a commitment to.

THAT is what Cornel West is talking about. Jealous? Jealous about WHAT? This isn't about personalities. This is an intellectual argument as to WHAT WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE DOING as a nation.

When I think of what the president of the united states has to do to play the game, and when they do, they can expect that kind of criticism, I think it is not for the faint of heart and mind.

It's aged Obama. I feel that deep inside, BO knows that he's conceded, or like people around me say, "spelunker in chief" is what resulted, well, then, what can one expect? These are things unrelated to race.

Just look at one of the front-runners for the GOP nomination.

I'm sure West has support within the black community. However, many don't support his racist language toward the President.

And you should keep your nose out of the conversation basically. Not this one, but the one happening in the black community. It would be like you getting involved in a dispute between reform and Orthodox Jews.

...towards Obama.

Him and Tavis Smiley are well known Obama haters without much constructive criticism...

Also very disagree that West labeling of Obama is acceptable just because West is black or a civil rights leader.

West is an asshole, a condescending asshole... I'm blown away at the tone deafness of the association with Sanders.

support Obama than have even heard of Cornel West.

Which is probably why Cornel West turned from supporter to hater. He didn't get his engraved invitation to the inauguration, so he didn't feel he was treated with the deference he was due.

What a jerk.

I think other great speakers are going to picture themselves at Sanders rallies. Events like these are highly conducive for other progressives getting their message out.

as the youth is concerned. They want real change and
welcome Bernie.

When you get older many people are afraid of a lot
of change - positive or negative - and prefer minor
tweaking of the system. A lot of these look to
HRC as a sound continuation of present policies.

This time around though I believe most voters
want a real change, jmo.

He is just amazing.

And everywhere i go, I meet people who are talking about Bernie, supporting Bernie and feeling the Bern.

It's just amazing.

Feel the Bern once again.

We are a great country. We are a compassionate country. And we can return to our greatness and our compassionate roots. There is nothing we cannot do if we work together. I was raised on that philosophy. I believe that philosophy. It is the American way.

Nowhere in the world do people know how to throw potluck suppers like we do in America. Nowhere. And those suppers are the symbols of how we love each other and work together for each other. It's the most American of traditions.

The Pilgrims did it. Our pioneer great-great-great-great-grandparents did it. And we will do it again. We will work together to improve our cpimtru/

He is a powerful advocate for all in this country of ours.

He gave a great introductory speech for Sanders, and Sanders' speech was amazing as well.

Men like these two give me some modicum of hope this election season. I know that a small group of rapid Clinton supporters will begin their attacks here shortly, if not already, on West and Sanders because of West.

168. Cornel West: Obama A ‘Republican In Blackface’
Sun Sep 13, 2015, 09:02 AM
Sep 2015

During an interview last week with Democracy Now, author and activist Cornel West offered harsh criticism of President Barack Obama, calling him a “Rockefeller Republican in blackface” and not someone who is actually looking out for the best interests of the impoverished. The prominent social critic also lashed out at black MSNBC personalities, accusing them of “selling their souls” in support of a president who has been anything but progressive.

Very disappointed that Bernie would want to align himself with this character.
