2016 Postmortem

"When the Congressional Black Caucus asked me to present my discovery of the illegal purge of Black voters in Florida, only one white guy showed: Bernie Sanders. Hillary: MIA. I'm tired of hearing that Sanders doesn't reach out to Black folk. He's been on the front lines since Selma. I don't endorse candidates but I also don't tolerate bullshit over facts." - Greg Palast

I think voter suppression/purging is an issue Sanders should amplify during his campaign. If the GOPers have a weak candidate there will be even more reason for a more widespread attack on voters.

(109,021 posts)I also have several members of my extended family who are AA. You are right that AA people don't all think the same way. But why would you want to alienate any of them by linking West to the campaign?
Surely there are others who haven't been going out of their way to sling personal insults at the President.
http://www.ibtimes.com/cornel-west-endorsement-bernie-sanders-could-get-second-look-black-voters-2067836
What America needs to understand about black voters is that were not a monolithic [block] and that we all dont listen to or follow under [the] lockstep of Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, said Stacey Hopkins, an African-American who backs Sanders and volunteers for a Women For Bernie support group in Atlanta. Still, Hopkins said it will benefit Sanders that West has credentials among the generation that arose in the Occupy movement and speaks to the liberation movement that is the platform of Black Lives Matter."
But a figure like West, who has been known to lock arms with activists from the Black Lives Matter movement, also poses risks for Sanders campaign among black voters. Andra Gillespie, a professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta, said West angered some in the black community when he very publicly blasted President Barack Obama as out of touch on issues of poverty and criminal justice during the 2012 election cycle. Obama has enjoyed a high approval rating among blacks and garnered more than 90 percent of the black vote in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, something that Wests criticisms have not changed.

He cannot be reelected.
So why would anyone worry so much about Obama and what was said in the past when he will not be a big part of the election of the next president.
Obama is tangental to choosing a current candidate. Worrying about him while deciding who to vote for in the upcoming election is ridiculous.
I saw this at the midterms here in NC when ads attacking Kay Hagan were all about Obama. You'd've thought she WAS Obama or doing the real governing from a secret undisclosed location. And Obama wasn't going anywhere for a time. Obama would be there whether Hagan won or not. I thought only Conservatives who went nuts over a black man in the White House would fall for such absurdities like voting because of something that wasn't gonna affect anything.

Suffice to say. Having NonPoC lecture others of the effects of whatever to other people feels like a hijack. If there are no PoCs here willing or wanting to argue this point, then so be it.
I would hate to read this kind of thing in regards to Latinos. The way I would find it less ----patronizing, would be to ask for agreement from someone of the offended party.
There are PoC posters here who agree that West is "vile". Link to those posts and add on. If you feel he is "vile" say that, but don't start to speak for the group. The group, like most minorities have gut reaction to having someone from the majority explain their reactions or emotions. We are all perfectly capable of explaining our own experience, there is no need for a third party to interpret it for the masses.
And I like the poster, I just don't think this has crossed her mind.

(9,497 posts)I have read it. Just link to the post or write in reply in agreement. It is the ownership factor, that is rubbing other members of the AA community wrong.I am actually trying to mediate for you because you are a good person but you are losing any effect you wish to make. It isn't about how you feel about West, or how some Blacks feel about West, it is about you speaking authoritatively that we all should feel the same way or shamed and to denounce it. And to stop him from being with Sanders.
Personally, I had a hard time responding to minorities and listening to their thoughts on BLM only to find out they were not minorities. It felt ---disingenuous. Dishonest. Speak from your own narrative.
Do this:
I don't like West. I don't like how hurt many members of the Black community were sucker punched when West went off on President...PRESIDENT Obama and created a new talking point. I have a mixed family and the effects of racism on my family members is constant, unrelenting and those who do it, don't need someone to help them do it more. I would love to see Sanders with someone else. Am I speaking out of turn or are their members of the community that agree with me? How does this impact you?
Instead of :
What you are doing.
Because when people speak their Truth and not what they think is someone else's Truth, it cannot be wrong. But when you start to be the spokesperson for a group and the entire group hasn't elected you, expect push back. From everyone.
TO CLARIFY: I am on the fence about West. I didn't think President Obama needed a kick in the ass so soon and so harshly. But I respect that my opinion is not the ONLY opinion. I can love some of the richness West has brought into our collective consciousness. I can be less than pleased about other...things.

(27,275 posts)i know plenty who do. unlike the myth that many have been pushing here, some black people do not like everything Obama has done, and don't consider him a hero or a beloved family member or the second coming, and are not hurt or devestated that some people don't like him, even if they are black. and i understand that many found West's comments offensive but i am not going to condemn him to appease the "sanders black problem" AGENDA. you all can carry on, but as i said before, if this was coming from a sanders supporters, all hell would be breaking loose in the AA forum. so i have no problem calling out this rank hypocrisy.

Palast to testify at US Civil Rights Commission Thursday July 15th
Wednesday, July 14, 2004
The US Civil Rights Commission has asked Greg Palast to testify before a special commission hearing Thursday, July 15th at 11am, to discuss his continuing investigative reports for BBC Television on Florida and other states' cleansing of Black voters from voter rolls. Palast's reports provide the basis for the story on the vote fix in Florida featured in Michael Moore's 'Fahrenheit 9/11.'
The Commission requested that the Florida Secretary of State testify jointly with Palast before the Commission.
The hearings are open to the public and to the media.
Palast's latest investigation has uncovered new attempts by the State of Florida to take away the votes of African-Americans - this includes a fix in registries and in ballot counting methods and racial bias in the computerization of the ballot box. "Florida put Jim Crow in cyberspace in 2000 ... and it's looking worse in 2004."
The Democratic Caucus of Congress has also asked Palast to appear Thursday morning before the hearings to explain the latest from his investigations of vote fixes and the Bush-bin Laden family connection. Palast will also be a panelist on a joint Minority Outreach Forum sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus and Senator Hillary Clinton. "I'm happy to speak to Republicans, too," said journalist Palast, "but I haven't received a request to drop by Dick Cheney's bunker."...

There is a reason the CBC overwhelmingly supports her--she's been there when they called on her for backing. She's been there, with her rolodex, with her donor lists, with her pro-bono strategists, with her HILLPAC, with her votes. She's campaigned for and with them, and so has her husband.
People go with the ones that help them. This is not surprising. Sanders will never get traction with the CBC. Show me one picture where he showed up to campaign with one of them in a reelection battle. One picture. One grip and grin at a rubber chicken dinner. One "Donate to my good friend (fill in the name of a CBC rep). One lousy little LETTER "Hi, I'm Bernie Sanders and I am writing to ask you to send a few bucks to the reelection campaign of (fill in name of CBC rep)." Naaah--he's too good for that stuff. (15,435 posts)The London Times, almost sure I read it there because I recall thinking it's something I would read in The Guardian. AND, it was written before there 2000 Presidential election. He wrote n article about what G. W. Bush intended to do when he got elected. What caught my eye was the fact that he said "when" and not "if." Wasn't sure if it was just how he worded it or if he was saying that Bush WAS going to be elected. After reading the article it became clear he did mean "when" and he explained that Bush or those around him had always intended to invade Iraq. I didn't know as much about Palast back then so as I learned more I was shocked.
There were many who knew that Bush was going to get elected and what he was going to do. I did everything I could back then to get verification of his article but never did. I even tried contacting The London Times so I could get a copy. Maybe there's copy out there now, but I was new to PC and had limited knowledge. But I told everyone I knew, but don't recall anyone even believing me.
So when Bush was elected (not) and under the cloud of suspicion from the get-go, I began to follow Palast and came to know how much investigation he put into what he wrote. I think I can count on two or maybe only one hand journalists that really got the facts and almost always told it like it was.
Now this, WOW! Spread the word.
