Romney Has Imploded

by BooMan
Thu Jul 26th, 2012 at 11:02:59 PM EST

Even though some of the Olympic competitions have already started, the opening ceremony is scheduled for 6pm local time tomorrow. Mitt Romney's itinerary says he'll be there, but he'd probably like to be anywhere else. All anyone in the U.K. is talking about is how stupid and obnoxious Mitt Romney has been since his arrival in their country. By insulting their preparations for the games, Romney received direct and harsh rebukes from both the Prime Minister and the mayor of London. He also violated Britain's security protocols by revealing the whereabouts of the head of MI6, their equivalent of the CIA. He forgot the name of the Labor Party's leader. He questioned whether the country could unite to celebrate the Olympics. And this all came after his adviser said (essentially) that Romney was a better ally of the U.K. than the current occupant of the White House because he isn't a negro.

Romney will be jeered anywhere he goes in London. This is particularly true because it's now being reported in Britain that Romney wrote the following in his idiotic 2010 book No Apology: The Case for American Greatness:

England {sic} is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn't make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy. And if it hadn't been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler's ambitions. Yet only two lifetimes ago, Britain ruled the largest and wealthiest empire in the history of humankind. Britain controlled a quarter of the earth's land and a quarter of the earth's population.

The British media are also reporting that Romney has insulted their health care system and has repeatedly denigrated Europe throughout the primaries and campaign. If all these things were not bad enough, 10 Downing Street has let it be known that they found Romney to be 'apparently devoid of charm, warmth, humour or sincerity,' and 'worse than Sarah Palin.'

And all this criticism is coming from members of the Conservative Party and their preferred newspaper outlets like the U.K. Telegraph and The Daily Mail.

If Romney wanted to make the case that he'd get along with the U.K. better than Obama, he's failed spectacularly. Tomorrow, he will be the least welcome person at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. And the Olympics were supposed to be Romney's only remaining strength, since his record as governor is indefensible and his record at Bain Capital is appalling.

The good thing is that the screw-ups do force the Rmoney campaign to scramble every time he steps in it, and these gaffes and revealing blunders do make him look less and less presidential all the time.

He'd have to do something blatantly offensive to the Obama haters and their Bagger values to lose their support. But for the small number of Undecideds and Independents, all this is tarnishing the Willard brand, big time.

Old habits die hard. Romney has been surrounded by sycophants and suck ups his entire life. Other than his father, he's probably never faced people he didn't somehow "own," whom he can't abuse and insult without meeting with their real reactions.

The simple fact is the guy doesn't have a clue how to relate to anybody he can't either order around or fire, or who isn't a jackass like he is.

When he was Governor, he met the leaders of the Massachusetts Great and General Court and the other Constitutional officers. When the SJC ruled that same sex couples had the right to marry, Rmoney asked then AG Tom Reilly to ask them for more time to implement it. Tom said, "I can't do that. You're asking me to make a political argument. They'll only listen to a constitutional argument." He then reminded the Mittster that he had been hired by the people of the Commonwealth, not by the Governor.

Maybe he'll just call Israel a "worthless stretch of sand" and he "doesn't understand what all the fighting is about."

All I have to say to the republican party is, "Is this REALLY the best you can do? Good Lord." He's only important because he's the "presumptive" nominee for the republican party and he's already causing people in the White House to OD on Rolaids and lose sleep. That those Yurpeean re-porters are all commies, socialists, and leftists are lying left-wingers is clear as daylight. They're in Yee-urope. That means they're left-wing, quiche-eating, g*d-hating lying socialist commies, not true 'murrican patriots. QED.

(Translation: Right-wingers don't pay much, if any attention, to what European media says about Mitt Romney or other Republican/"conservative" politicians, even if the sources are right-wing. After all, the reports come from Europe, they aren't filtered through Fox News, NewsMax, or Human Events, therefore they aren't considered credible.)

Mitt still has time to screw up again on the next leg of his trip. He's going to Israel and I understand he has called Netanyahu "his good friend" from when they both were at Bain back in the day. Netanyahu has denied that they were friends and that he hardly knew Romney. In other words, the Mittster has already screwed up his Israel trip and he hasn't even gotten there yet. I'm sure there will be more gaffe from the social awkward Republican candidate. Ahhhh . . . repugs, how do you feel about you nominee now? Not quite ready for prime time is he?

...(T)he Olympics were supposed to be Romney's only remaining strength, since his record as governor is indefensible and his record at Bain Capital is appalling.

Which is precisely WHY Romney's campaign platform has been reduced to "he isn't a Negro."

Of course, I noticed that about two days ago:
Now that his business, government, and Olympics platforms have collapsed, Mitt's only recourse is to come up with ways of saying "Vote for me because I'm NOT the black guy."

42. Problem for Mitt is that he went there to show that HE is the one to "repair" relations with allies.
Fri Jul 27, 2012, 11:23 AM
Jul 2012

If he hadn't touted publicly that HE and the republicans think the President has abandoned and dissed the "non foreign" allies like England, he might save some face. But the dude has been shouting and posturing that President Obama has caused America to lose standing the World, and that he's basically an embarrassment. His whole schtick was to show up the President, and appease the tea baggers who cling to their "anglo saxon" heritage.

So it's a massive fail all around. What Romney did is akin to saying "watch this!!" then riding your bike into a garage door face first, while attempting a stunt.

Most American voters have the attention span of a gnat. Add to that the media's gross negligence, and you have Romney skating right on through to the election. For President Obama to win, his campaign has to be mistake free and ultra disciplined. No worries there. However, funding, media, economy - all of them playing a role in deciding the election - are outside the Obama campaign's control.

and to win, all Obama has to do is keep pointing that out.

As the article suggests, Romney's records as both a public servant and a private entrepreneur either disqualify him or are figments of his imagination. And I don't believe there are enough moderates or independents who will back Romney if he doesn't produce his tax returns (link) -- particularly those from the Bain-Olympic era.

and that was when he was a "newbie" and made plenty of "mistakes"

if you think about Rev. Wright, etc.

He's now Experienced, Accomplished, and has the advantage of being

the incumbent, not to mention his very high levels of "likability"

even among those who don't like his policies. Add to that Romney's TERRIBLE personal appeal*,

even among his own party, and I think you have a "win" for Obama.

*John McCain, despite his slight "grumpiness" had nothing like Romney's awkward,

insincere, and "disconnected" quality. In addition, he had the gravitas of being a POW.

Besides money, Romney has NOTHING...No warmth, personality, no war record,

NO consistency (Is there ANY issue he hasn't flipped on?) and beyond that,

He is severely lacking in "transparency" (those tax returns) and doesn't even

have an undisputed record of business success.

His is the picture that appears when looking up the phrase "empty suit".

53. Getting Out of the Convention Alive
Fri Jul 27, 2012, 12:09 PM
Jul 2012

My own take is that Romney will not get out of the GOP Convention as the nominee. Tea Party support for him is at best tepid, the fundamental Christian vote isn't going to materialize just on the basis of his being a Mormon, and his class cluelessness has the 1%ers very nervous. Both the paleo- and neo- Cons have effectively repudiated him, and I suspect that if his trip to Israel is as inept as his trip to England has been, then he'll lose the Likud supporters in the states. I think there's a STRONG probability that there will be a dark-horse candidate come out of the convention, after Mitt will decide to step down as presumptive nominee "for health reasons".

Fri Jul 27, 2012, 08:04 PM
Jul 2012

As noted earlier in the thread, those "stupid furriners" aren't going to vote for Rmnony. In fact, Romney's crazed supporters mostly hate foreigners, and from that perspective, I'm wondering if Romney is faking his mistakes, too. He lies so blatantly and with such obvious knowledge of the truth, that he could be playing some kind of 3D chess there...

You have to remember that Romney is smart and fundamentally Nixonian. He knows the truth quite well, and just has no respect or interest in it. It's not like Dubya, who didn't respect the truth, either, but who didn't have any idea what the truth was.

Actually, I'm always thinking about these things in terms of the most effective anti-Romney ads. Romney is the anti-Reagan, which might be the best advertising approach to reach the followers of so-called Sayn't Raygun. Reagan didn't know the truth, but he cared a LOT about what he wanted it to be. Romney knows the truth, but fsck it.

Unfortunately, Repubs and Indys might like Mitt better just because Britain hates him. Remember, American Exceptionalism? They grinned and beared it with Dubya, they can do it with Mitt. Britain's a harder sell than France, but it can be done.

However, if he makes this kind of splash in Israel too, he might as well hang it up. He probably going to be spending his trip shutting up.

Europe's economy is a disaster, and Americans don't want to have Europe's problems. If Romney had distanced himself from Europe, he could have scored points on the economy. But what he's done is idiotic, and we just have to hope that the Swing Voters remember.

Ignore the right wing and the solid red states, their votes won't swing the election.
