Their views on capitalism are strikingly similar, and should help Bernie pull in the Catholic vote that's not going to Biden.

(62,444 posts)The Pope is going to studiously avoid being a political prop for anyone, but that won't stop folks from trying.
If you haven't noticed, the GOP would like to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood. The Pope, as I understand it, is not a big fan.

(45,319 posts)choice. On those things he fully agrees with the Republicans who invited him to speak to the Congress. Francis uses climate and economic issues as a cover for his conservative and reactionary social views, and Democrats tend to agree with those views as he states them.
Francis himself does not care about our politics. He cares about the politics that made him Pope. His visit could very easily offend voters on both sides.
I hope for the sake of our country that your dear anti gay Francis watches his viper's tongue in the people's Congress and abstains from his denigration of LGBT and women.
I support equality for all people, reproductive choice and I oppose telling people in Africa not to use condoms because 100,000 Africans a month die of AIDS.
The Pope is opposed to equality for all, opposed to all reproductive choice and tells people in Africa that condoms spread HIV.

(10,044 posts)I was hoping women would be allowed to become priests. So were a lot of nuns.
I don't know how he can preach against gays when there are communities of gay priests tucked away here and there. He accepts gays in the church, to what extent I don't know.
Where I appreciate him is his condemning capitalism, especially here in the U. S. People aren't dying of a lot of diseases here, but there has been disproportionate number of favors the 1% have received from the government and from each other, and 99% have a hard time just getting basics like a place to live, a car, some health care, etc.. Even gays are affected by this stuff and would live better if some changes were made...such as those proposed by Warren and Bernie.
The changes started with Biden's open admission that he was not against love or marriage for gays, and have been roller coasting since then. Next was the Supreme Court, ruling in their favor. Russia, Europe, maybe China, I don't know, and Muslim countries are very anti-gay. Canada's been leading the way somewhat, but nothing's perfect there either.
All people need basics, even gays. Rights without material things are meaningless. Let's get everybody fed and clothed and housed. The gay battle has produced results, but we have to stick together so that everyone benefits.
Sorry to sound preachy, but to sympathize with gays does not preclude the good some have done by some to be recognized.
But you stick to your guns and don't give up. Blacks Lives Matter, veterans, women, immigrants and unions won't give up and atheists want not to be discriminated against, and somehow someway life will get better (ie if it ends with the double full-moon this month, all bets are off)...
I get it.

(10,044 posts)There were several who made conversions by threatening with death, and they did kill many for god.
This one is at least human, will not try to kill you, and would not be mad at you for hating him. He doesn't like a lot of the bishops in Rome himself...and according to what I heard on the news today, many would like to get rid of them because they have lost and may lose more cushy positions (probably nice cars, too).. He came from a small village in So. American, drove a crummy car and helped the poor people there. He refuses to wear that huge pointed hat/crown, whatever. Too bad Rome couldn't send him something to make their lives better in his old town...they have tons of wealth, but it's invested and can't be spent..just like millionaires here claim....
My problem is with church doctrine, and if you know it, I can't believe the Apostles' Creed. I can't believe it no matter who is the pope.

(57,349 posts)Paying lip service to poverty and environmental concerns makes no sense when you want to keep denying women birth control.
And telling others he won't judge gay priests who remain celibate while preaching about how the children of lgbt parents are victims of discrimination is fucked up.
He may not be as bad as some of his predecessors but he won't get a pass from me.

(10,044 posts)but am waiting to see how much more he intends to change or "forgive." So many Catholics are burdened by church rules.
I wish I could be part of it, but for me, it's not rules, it's doctrine. To suit me, there wouldn't be a Catholic Church, or for that matter, any church. But I like that Catholics and others who need it have it, and many do.
I just wish freedom of religion applied equally to folks without religion, who believe in laws, peace, empathy, and tolerance.

(30,481 posts)Thinks we are sinners and less thans. The Pope is using rhetoric that some like in order to fill his coffers, yet is still spreading hate out of the other side of his mouth. Some are actually falling for his shit. That's all I got to say about that.
