Politico: Bernie Sanders says the pope's agenda is just like his

Bernie Sanders says the pope's agenda is just like his

"He is looking in the eyes of the wealthiest people in this country who make billions of dollars. And he is saying, you know what? You cannot continue to ignore the needs of the poor. You cannot continue to ignore the needs of the sick," the senator continued, remarking that his economic message is one that "many of our Republican colleagues do not want to hear."

"He doesn't have to do this thing, right? He could play it a lot easier. But he is saying the planet is at stake, fossil fuel is contributing significantly to climate change. We have got to address it," Sanders said. "That's what I admire about him, his audacity and his courage."

and the madness of predatory capitalism that is a very fair statement. And those are the two most imperative issues of our time.

And if Naomi Klein, one of the very best and brightest of the Left, can make common cause with Pope Frank on those issues why can't the rest of us?

This whole Family Meeting he's here for has banned all the LGBT friendly Catholic groups and they invited Rick Warren. That is not common ground for me, but for an affluent married straight lady like Klein it's just another cozy media event with her friend Francis.

Do you endorse banning some minority groups from various events? If so, which minorities and which events?

It seems that people could qualify their gushing praise of him if they wish to retain the trust of LGBT and pro choice voters. How hard could it be?

This man is a political activist who opposes equality and reproductive choice. He is being promoted on DU politically.

I think Report1212 got it right. People aren't promoting the pope as much as they're promoting things the pope is saying that they agree with. I agree that the pope is wrong on a ton of stuff, but I will give him kudos for speaking out on inequality and global warming.

And that's the problem with this legitimization of a conservative bigot.

I'll agree with that. It would be better if while praising the pope on things we agree with, we could also point out where he's lacking.

You dont have to agree with someone 100% to find some of their ideas commendable thats how you live in a pluralistic society

the other area of disagreement? I don't think that you would. So what's your point exactly? Why is it that people can't qualify their drooling over a bigot by saying 'I do not agree with the bigotry'?

Do you think that the Pope calling LGBT persons disordered and our rights from the devil is good for a pluralistic society? Why is that not your concern? You stand not with the people but with powers, that's why.

There actually no rules about who can become pope. It is not impossible for a Jew from Brooklyn to end up as the landlord in Vatican City. After all it was a Jew in Israel who started the whole thing.

Needless to say, its a lot more likely he could be elected POTUS than POPE.

These are, as the Chinese curse has it, interesting times.

They share the same concern for economic disparity and the environment but couldn't be farther apart on women's and LGBT rights.
The Pope is an important voice on the issues where they align however and I welcome his voice on those issues.

is climate change. if the predictions are as dire as they seem, and if we don't get our collective asses in gear, it wont matter who married who or how much is in anybodys bank account

cuz we'll all be dead.
