In First Presidential Debate, Mitt Romney Refuses To Admit His Name Is Mitt Romney

OCTOBER 4, 2012 (NFP) - Last night in Denver, the Republican nominee for the Presidency of the United States got even weirder.

When debate moderator Diane Sawyer said, "My first question goes to you, Governor Romney," she was immediately interrupted by the candidate.

"Okay," the GOP standard-bearer broke in, "why are you assuming that my name is Romney? And why are you assuming I was a Governor? Is this a gotcha question, Diane?"

Taken aback, the anchor of ABC's World News Tonight replied, "No, Governor, this is not a---"

"There you go again!" exclaimed Romney. "Do you have any documents proving I was ever a Governor, or that my name is Mitt Romney? Come on, Diane, either put up or shut up!"

At this point, panelist Chris Hayes chimed in: "Sir, you're running for President, and there's no dispute that your name is, in fact, Mitt Romney, and that you served four years as Governor of Massa---"

"Massa?!?" Romney shouted. "Are you implying I owned slaves??? That is a total distortion by the n---uh, erm, ah---the Obama campaign!"

Sawyer tried to regain control of the situation: "Mr. Romney, you are not acting rationally, and I---"

"YES!" screamed the Republican, his voice effortlessly achieving a pitch heard usually from the throats of 12-year-old girls. "Health care will be rationed in a second Obama term! You can't handle the truth! And you're not even the right height to be questioning me!!!"

It was at this point that the candidate's wife came to his rescue, riding onto the stage atop her horse Rafalca, she scooped her husband up on the animal's back and charged out of the University of Denver's amphitheater, screaming, "Why are you people bothering us??? You don't need to know about our sex li---I mean our taxes! You should be paying US taxes for offering you my husband's leadership!"

Afterword, the political analysis was unanimous. "Romney hit a grand-slam," enthused Charles Krauthammer. "Obama got his butt handed to him tonight," echoed David Brooks, while Bill Kristol declared, "Barack Obama is finished as a political force in this country. And he's black."

A Rasmussen poll conducted in the hours after the debate showed Romney leading Obama by 126 percentage points nationally, and three times that margin in the swing states. The poll also found that 48% of Americans believe that Jesus Christ and Elvis Presley are the same person.
