2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy best guess is that Romney doesn't release his tax returns until October. And republicans
continue to reopen the story of Romney's tax returns every time the political narrative is not going Romney's way. Right now Romney's trip was a fiasco and looky here: "Hey Harry" "shhhhh. Romney #$%%$$%^ tax returns didn't pay anything for 10 years".
Always with a republican starting the discussion. Always when Obama was scoring points on some other issue. And the tax returns will show nothing illegal.
The only alternative to this is if Obama were to bite and attack Romney himself for not releasing tax returns because "Romney is hiding something". Of course then Romney would release them.
That is my prediction. What is yours?

(14,177 posts)Um no. Romney hasn't ever released his returns to the public when running for any office. Stonewalling subjects him to speculation. I hope eventually someone that can get under Romney's skin comes up with some speculation that is even worse than the truth and he gets mad enough to release them. And no not being as bad as the worst case scenario is going to be good for Romney. The worst I have heard so far is that he has done something felonious. Then there is the one where they might prove he was an illegitimate Governor which I believe is factual even without hard proof. Romney right now looks like a waffler with something to hide. If he didn't have such an army of bigots backing him he would already be dead in the water.

If there really was nothing damaging in those returns he would have released them by now.

...have you been and why do you keep pushing this strange narrative?
I mean, the Obama campaign and Democratic ads and Reid's comments have nothing to do with it?
In case you haven't noticed:

(54,770 posts)His effective rate will be so low that Democrats howl, and even some republicans go, "shoot, that don't look good, and might lead to higher/tougher taxes on rich. "
The debate might be good.
Will be interesting.
Oh -- FOX, Limbaugh, etc., will defend him with a bunch of ridiculous BS.

(12,461 posts)The fact he stopped his campaign, and did something outside the norm, each occasion had to do with his finances/taxes.
SEC - had him doing the Network plead a thon. Pulled him outside the right-wing bubble, Fox/RW Radio.
Reid's accusation - had him addressing Reid, instead of Obama. He is punching down, and as I said before. If Romney could humiliate Reid, the base would have eaten that up, pledging their firstborn to him.
Oh he has something to hide, he already gave us a hint...He is afraid we will pick it apart and find damaging information...isnt that what he said?

(15,667 posts)But nothing compared to the other things that Romney's taxes will show -- the lies about Bain, residence, etc.
He didn't pull an "October surprise" with them in any other race and he won't do it this time either because he is ashamed of what these documents will reveal.

(737 posts)He would have released them by now to avoid the pressure he's facing now with an unfavorability rating

(1,016 posts)That's why the out of country deposits, to avoid paying income tax. All perfectly legal and the 1% do it as principal. The income tax is gamed to benefit the 1%.
Romney will never release his taxes, Reid is right.
The 1% view on taxes: Helmsley's fate was sealed when a former housekeeper testified during the trial that she had heard Helmsley say: "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay.
The same reason Trump doesn't run for office, no income tax paid.
