Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), said Monday that his campaign is assembling a comprehensive package of measures to address gun violence and that he believes there is a way to bridge the countrys deep political divisions over the issue.
Sanders's comments came late in a day in which Hillary Rodham Clinton, his chief rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, made headlines for pledging to stand up to the gun lobby and push for genuine reforms in the wake of last weeks shootings at an Oregon community college....
....As he has in recent days, Sanders cited several measures he can support, including a strengthened system of instant background checks, closure of the gun-show loophole, a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons designed strictly for killing human beings and far greater investments in mental health.
Like the rest of the nation, I am appalled by gun violence in our country and the mass shootings in our churches and colleges, Sanders said. While there is no simple fix, that does not mean we should do nothing.

(314 posts)Bernie has always been pretty solid, although certainly not perfect, on the gun control issue. Talk to the contrary is pure silliness.

Makes sense. Unlike some people who represented the country for 16 years already, and still needed 16 years to evolve, 10 years to admit to mistakes that were right in all our faces, and still not addressing the militarization of police, which they supported, plunging millions of women and children into deep poverty with "welfare reform," which they supported, and losing jobs to NAFTA, which they supported.

(131,370 posts)PREVENTING AND REDUCING GUN VIOLENCE
Week after week, more images of horrific gun violence flash across our TV and computer
screens. These tragedies arent isolated incidents; they are part of a full-blownand entirely
preventableepidemic. We cannot afford to sit by and let this constant heartbreak become the
norm.
As a nation, it is time for sensible gun safety laws that save lives. That is why Governor
OMalley has set a national goal of cutting deaths from gun violence in half within 10 years.
As Governor of Maryland, OMalley implemented some of the toughest measures in the nation
to reduce gun violence. He put in place licensing, fingerprinting, background checks, and safety
training requirements for all buyers. If a firearm was lost or stolen, owners were required to
immediately notify law enforcement. And Maryland prohibited the sale of assault weapons and
limited the size of magazinesall while protecting the states proud hunting tradition.
Governor OMalley is calling for the nation to adopt similar, commonsense reforms.
